$4 for a gallon of milk

In carlisle kentucky a gallon of whole milks costs $4.05

In paris kentucky, at walmart, the same gallon costs $4.14

30 minutes down the road in lexington kentucky you can find a gallon of milk at aldis for $1.49. $1.99 at kroger

How in the world are the prices doubled just 30 minutes down the road?

Unfortunately we live in carlisle. Paid 3.75 for a gallon at the dollar store.

thanks

Texasdirtdigger 11/04/10 06:40 PM

I'm still buying it at 99cents. I have a freezer full, this price cannot last!

rhaige9 11/04/10 08:03 PM

We're $1.99 in my neck of Idaho. We were almost $4/gal in Mulberry Arkansas. I remember being so relieved at the milk prices when I moved here. We're big into dairy around here. There are three small family run dairies in under two miles around me. There are three cheese plants, and one dry milk powder plant within 20 mins from me.

MOgal 11/04/10 08:15 PM

There is a little country store between us and Fulton MO. I bought a gallon of milk there yesterday for $4.30 or saved about a dollar to drive all the way into Fulton, approximately 16 miles from that little store. Didn't figure I could make the drive for $1.00 so coughed up the money.

Boy, will I be glad when our goats freshen again.

tailwagging 11/04/10 08:25 PM

We drive 25 miles one way and pay $4.50 but we get ours from grass feed cows we can see.

Roadking 11/04/10 08:26 PM

$3.15 here.
Matt

Where in the world do you get milk for .99 in Texas???

We pay from 2.79 to 3.25.

PrettyPaisley 11/04/10 10:40 PM

Good grief! I pay $7/gallon!

clovis 11/04/10 10:41 PM

$1.99 for Kroger 2% in central Indiana.

Walmart in our area has gotten greedy though. They are trying to charge $3.39, and more, when they can get away with it.

We always try to buy at least one week's worth of milk when it does go on sale to help carry us through to the next grocery sale on milk.

How? Where? Why? It's $2 +/- here.

hotzcatz 11/05/10 12:42 AM

And I thought our $6 a gallon milk was expensive! At least it's not $7.

Rockytopsis 11/05/10 01:35 AM

I can hardly wait for my goat to kid, 4 months and counting. The last gallon I bought was 4.30. DH bought a gallon today and I did not even ask. Afraid to.

Helena 11/05/10 02:06 AM

Pa has a price minimum of around $3.50.. can not sell for less.. In NY 5miles away it's around $2.40 a gallon. Even when Aldi's has a milk sale Pa prices will stay at the state minimum to "help" the farmers.

mariaricarto 11/05/10 02:21 AM

Here in Hawaii; fresh, raw, with over a cup of cream on top, 1 gallon......$15
$4 sounds Great!

calliemoonbeam 11/05/10 04:31 AM

Ours is always over $4, at Walmart, local chain groceries, QuikTrip, doesn't matter. Someone a couple of weeks ago was saying Aldi's had milk for $1.99 where they were. I tried ours, but even Aldi's was $4.35. Sure glad I don't use much milk, lol. If I do catch a good price, I buy half a dozen gallons and put them in the freezer, but we don't very good sales often around here. If it was $6-7 a gallon I'd just give up milk altogether!

Texasdirtdigger 11/05/10 04:31 AM

Not sure why it all got started... Aldi's advertised it for 99 cents about a month ago, Walmart, and the chain stores HAD to follow suit. Walmart and Kroger still have the special going.... sometime the chain store will run it "with additional purchase".
It's butter that is sky high here! Oucheewawa!!!

Texasdirtdigger 11/05/10 05:58 AM

I just won't buy it at the high prices.....I just can't make myself do it.

Countrystyle 11/05/10 07:36 AM

A week ago Hiland #1 butter 3.98! Same brand -milk $4. I was sticker shocked! Last time I bought the same butter it was $2.39 or so!

So odd.. we are in Nwest Louisiana ( about 185 miles from you) and store brand is costing us 3.99 and has been between 3.49-3.99 consistenly for months.

SFM in KY 11/05/10 07:45 AM

Milk is one of our major food items in our grocery budget. DH isn't a big eater but he does like milk so we go through about 5 gallons a week. It's been staying around $4.00 a gallon here.

I wish I felt more comfortable about getting a cow or goats but I'm the only person here that can milk, DH has arthritis in his hands and can't close his hands the way he'd have to to milk. I'm just not willing to go that route without having an "emergency milker" available so have reluctantly decided it simply isn't an option.

SueMc 11/05/10 07:48 AM

Milk is still $3.19 around here. I did have sticker shock though when I saw bacon for around $6/lb!

geo in mi 11/05/10 07:53 AM

Meijer--Kalamazoo $2.00/gal for any percent last two weeks. Dean's is about $1.75 higher(if I remember right....)

The Deans display has crowded out the grass-fed milk--even the half gallons which were usually about $3.50 to $4.00 per half gallon.....That stuff sure tasted good....

(But I don't want to keep a cow or goat....)

Here's something to help you fall asleep at night.(Or if you fully understand it, it may keep you awake all night--it does that to the dairy farmers....)http://www.midmddairyvets.com/docs/MilkPricingWisc.pdf
What a labyrinth!

2.28 at Walmart, 3.29 at Krogers in Brownwood -- prices have been stable for months. About once a month the local IGA has it on sale 2/$4.00. Heavy cream prices have risen, though. Walmart now $1.78, up from 1.67 a couple of months ago. Krogers has also risen, but can't remember how much. I only buy butter on sale ($1.99 at Krogers several weeks ago--I stocked up).

suzyhomemaker09 11/05/10 10:24 AM

Commodities always fluctuate in price...it's good to keep on yer toes and know prices so you can get the best deals....
Someone mentioned bacon...pork prices skyrocketed not long ago...same lb of bacon I bought at most markets for $2.50 now sells for almost $4. Local store had bacon ( my brand too ) as a loss leader of 2.97 a lb...best price in town.
I don't much look at milk prices as we squeeze our goats for it here...but butter is crazy too..just recently at Aldi I could get a lb for $1.69..now it's over $2.50 everywhere.

Roadking 11/05/10 11:22 AM

Heck, even the powdered around here is the same price (when mixed) per gallon. Just got back from the store; 2%milk $3.49, Keller's butter, 1lb $3.49, sugar, 4 pounds $2.69, rice $.79 per pound, canned pizza sauce 15 oz. $0.33 (yeah, I cleaned them out, kids love it).
Matt

Beeman 11/05/10 04:58 PM

Price fluctuates greatly, one week over $4 next week $3. For laughs find out where your milk is actually coming from.

beaglebiz 11/05/10 05:38 PM

three fifty or so a gallon here, but PA prices are regulated by the state for minimum pricing

melissa78 11/05/10 06:35 PM

Can buy Hannaford brand milk for $3.15 here in Vermont, but I ordinarily buy our local Monument Farms (2 towns away) brand milk for $3.95. They are HUGE supporters of ag education (my last job) and they buy a lot from the auto parts store where I work now, which earns me sales commision, so I gladly pay a little more their dairy products:)

Trixie 11/05/10 08:06 PM

My husband tells me I was wrong about the price of milk here in NE Texas - it was $4.35 a gallon. I was thinking of the prices at home. Yes, butter is outrageous.

I'm not sure why, but food is higher here in NE Texas, than it is in Central Texas - everything.

snoozy 11/05/10 08:18 PM

I buy organic milk - it is $5.69 a gallon.

Why would you buy chemical and hormone laden white stuff for $2 a gallon when you can get real nutrition without the carcinogens and hormone wonkifiers?

Well it's raw milk from a farmer across the state line in SC. I know the guy who delivers it adds an upcharge but since my *$&#^ chickens aren't laying I have to pick up eggs from him anyhow and I just pay the $2/gal extra to keep from having to drive and hour north for eggs and and hour south for milk. Just outside of Charlotte.

My hubby can't milk our goats to save his soul. However there are several non-electric milkers that are pretty easy to use in a pinch. A couple of them that I have come across are the "Udderly EZ" and the other is the "Henry Milker"

Sounds like you both might be more comfortable with a mini breed or a good milking Nigerian. Nigerians have the highest butter fat of all the dairy breeds and it is possible to make butter from their milk without having to use a cream separator.

ladycat 11/06/10 08:39 AM

Store brands of milk around here is over $3 a gallon. Name brands are over $4 (but an Aldi's is going to open and they said their milk is going to be cheaper).

I get milk from a local farm. It's in glass jars and costs $2.49 for a half gallon.

jenangelcat 11/06/10 11:02 AM

$7 here.

arabian knight 11/07/10 09:57 AM

I just bought 3 gallons yesterday, and at 2.75, which has been the same price now for quite a spell.

Tracy Rimmer 11/07/10 10:23 AM

In my part of Canada -- and several other parts I've been to recently -- a HALF gallon of milk (2 litres) is $4.

Consider yourselves lucky. I couldn't imagine paying $0.99 for a gallon. How on earth do you produce a gallon of milk, commercially, for $0.99?

It's probably a loss leader for the store. They probably pay twice that for it.

Loriann1971 11/07/10 08:19 PM

I am in Pa and I pay about 3.69 a gallon for the cheapest store brand. My kids drink between 3-4 gallons a week, so I wish I could get it for less. Sometimes we drive out to the military commissary in Oakdale and I can get it there for $2.60. When I go there, I buy a few and freeze them.

Obviously you can't and you probably can't actually produce transport refrigerate and market it for under $4 and be profitable if that. But we like to believe in a free market, it makes us feel good.
