i know 2 ppl nearby us who did this. one is a bachlor who just made an apartment in a morton building, i think he restores tractors. the other i know better, she and her hubby were moving from several states away. he put in an apartment into a large morton type barn, but was planning to build a 'real' house a couple miles away. they raise very nice hunting dogs, and have them in kennels on one lenght of the barn. when he was about to build the house, she said no way! didn't wanna be getting up at 2 am in our winters, truding 2 miles away to check a dog! so they live in the barn and its one of the neatest places i've been--the kinda home you simply feel at home in from the minute you walk in. its warm in winter, cool in summer, she has an art studio in the back half, dogs on the side, storage and garage on the other side. its not fancy, used simple lumber, etc., but is sooo neat! yes, it can be done and done well!

That figure is just to build the shell. No insulation, drywall, or interior finish. The plans can still be bought from www.backyard3.com, they are less than $20. My daughter has been the photo journalist for the project, I will try to get some pictures from her. I have kept materials invoices for building, as the house stands now, I have 17,500 invested.
In retrospect, if I were to do the house now, I would frame it with 2X6's, 24"O.C. I would get about 25% more insulation in the wall with no loss in strength with just a small increase in price.
