Not stupid Jackie; You have a different perspective. Mine is if the coons stay in the woods they don't have to die.

Yep, there is no quit in them. Even if I wanted to they were in a jumble of junk and I couldn't get at them. He is a little dinged up but nothing serious. Anyway, this kind of thing is this dogs purpose, it is why I have him, what he was bred for, and what he lives for.
When I let the bigger dog out they were able to get it out in the open where I was able to clout it in the head.

He tends to corner a critter and then dive in and grab ahold when he gets a chance. Half the fight is actually squaring of and making noise. I think most of the fight didn't occur til I was able to get the light on them. As soon as the light hit the coon the dog cranked it up.

tinkal, good on ya! I raise Feist squirrel dogs. While they are not quite in the JRT/RT class on grit they are pretty gritty. My house dog weighs 20 lbs and brought in a small 10-12 lb coon last week that he'd killed. I'd been missing some chickens and that quit when I found the dead coon. Just this morning he pulled a big possum out of the hay mow in the barn. Sorry I can/have/and will again eat coon. Possum...just can't do it. YUCK! LOL

Possum are new here. They have moved in in the last 10 years or so. Any desire I ever had to eat one disappeared the rainy night I saw one eating a road killed skunk.........
I'm guessing that he kills possum quite regularly, I just never see it because he does it quickly.

Having come from a different background, JRT means something entirely different to me. I used to buy cases and cases of them for movie theatres. I was trying to imagine what would happen if a raccoon got tangled up with one, and was immediately puzzled. Oh yeah, JRT = jumbo roll tissue, those mile long, 12" diameter rolls of toilet tissue you see in public restrooms.

Tinknal, so what was it my Dad always made us dig out of the legs before he smoked them? Maybe it was just fat or a connective tissue that wasn't appetizing. It was many years ago.

If I saw a live raccoon around here I would be so excited!!! I have only ever seen two in my life in the wild and they were dead on the side of the highway. A friend of a friend had one as a pet in her house once and it was like a little monkey. He learned how to open the fridge and turn on the taps to wash his food. It was the coolest pet ever. Not sure how it ever turned out though.

I think it got all tangled up in removing fat. To get the glands out you basically have to get all the fat off. The fat has a strong taste to it. Remove the glands, and you remove the fat. Some folks say the same things about deer. I've disassembled hundreds of them and never even seen these glands that folks talk about. The ones on the back legs come off with the skin.

It's fun to see a rare animal of any kind. When they are as thick as locusts, not so much........
I see at least 2 or 3 road kill coon every day, and I see a live one on the road every week or so.

What do you get for a coon hide?
I quite trapping two years ago when I got $20 for fisher. I remember the good ole days when I got over a $100 per hide.
Coons have really expanded their range in MN. I never ever remember seeing a coon growing up. I remember driving down to the twin cities though and South of Duluth the highways were littered with them. Then about 15 years ago they started making appearances at our lake house near Big Fork and there numbers grew from there. Now they regularly raid the place. They have also started showing up where I live within the last 10 years in a lot higher numbers. Again you see road killed coons all over the place around here too. I have never trapped them though, I stuck to martin, fisher and mink mostly.

I'm not sure on price right now. Usually anywhere from 5 to 40 bucks depending on the year, and the hide. This one is small, but nice fur and good color. I'm guessing $10 dollars if this is an average year. I also have a nice big boar hide from last year in the freezer.

tinknal, how I wish you lived in Indiana. I have been very curious about prep and taste of raccoon.
I have not been able to convince my neighbors to stop trapping and hauling them off to the river (with corn and bean fields on both sides). There's no telling how much damage the farmer suffered.

One year we were camping at Acadia National Park near Bah (Bar) Hahbah (Harbor) Maine. I was dozing in and out in front of a campfire after snacking on cantalope and blueberries. I spotted a coon in the dark underneath the picnic table carefully picking up fallen berries and munching them. I was still 100 per cent city boy then, and quite surprised.

An antique shop? They were popular in the 20s - 30s. You could always make your own. Might take a few years but it would be an interesting project.

The coons in that park are as big as bears. One of my favorite camping trips.

A racoon can drown a dog if they are in the water.
