This might be a stupid question but I am not very tech savvy.. I have been wanting another option for internet, we currently have dsl through our phone company. Will this aircard be comparable to that service? I would really like to cancel my home phone service all toghether. For those of you that have satellite do you have to have a landline? Thanks

Yep.
Seagull, you might want to do some looking around.
My cell company is just a really small, regional one...

Also remember you can get an amplifier to install in your home for better signal for both cell tower based internet and cell phones.

You install a good antenna on the roof, cable comes down to the amplifier, and then another cable to the inside antenna..

Your cell talks to the amplifier through the inside antenna, and it is relayed through the amplifier, out the antenna on the roof to the cell tower at many times the strength a cell phone is capable of...

They can extend your signal range significantly and get you good signal at a rural home that has a shoddy signal..

Here's an example...

Some of the cell companies will even offer these themselves...

..............The Virgin Mobil Aircard will send and receive data at ~~3 Megabytes per second , IF , You are within a geographical area that has access too 3G service ! My service is 3G at both job locations in the country even though , the coverage map doesn't indicate 3G coverage !!! And , I also have 3G service at my RV park .
...............IF you have 3G Virgin mobil Aircard service You should also beable too utilize a Virgin mobil Contract free phone , as well .......Remember Virgin mobil is actually Sprint\Nextell so they service a large area of the country . I'd check their coverage map as a first step before making a decision . , fordy

The coverage map shows that we have service, but there are alot of "spots" close to us that do not.. Do you happen to know if I switch and turn off my home phone if that affect my sattelite (dish network) service? Used to be that you had to have a landline connected?

We're Dish, too.
The reason you have to be land line connected is so that you can order PPV via the dish.
We had the phone port blow out of our sat. box a couple of years ago, though, so now we just order online.
There's nothing else our phone line seemed to do...

..................I can't answer your question about the satallite ! What I can tell you is this , You should beable too find a technician and ask him too come too your home and test the Signal strength of the nearest Cell tower with a meter that your Virgin mobil signal will work off of ! Do this Before you sign onto their service , I'd think they would be willing too help you in this respect . , fordy
