Maple syrup
Has anyone found a good source for reasonably priced real maple syrup? I buy it in bulk a gallon at a shot and the place I have been buying from suddenly shot up in price. The cheapest around here is $19 a quart.
For the last few years I've been paying anywhere from $42 - $52 per gallon. Various sources but none online lately (roadside stands and farmers markets).
The price of sugar, a comparable commodity has recently shot up as well. Possibly there is a connection.
I am figuring it may be more seasonal since you can only harvest a small amount of syrup in a limited area in a short time span. :) I wonder if it isn't much cheaper in the Spring?
I'd love to find it for $42 a gallon! :) I assume they actually harvest it there in the Upper peninsula? |
I have bought delicious maple syrup by the gallon right here on Homesteading Today from Seedspreader down on the barter board. I love it and highly recommend it. You might want to shoot him a PM to see if he still has any for sale. Give him your zip code so he can tell you what the total would be including shipping.
Edited to add. I had some just this morning with sourdough pancakes. Oh my gosh, it is good! |
I knew somebody sold it here, thanks! :)
I didn't realize Seedspreader sold syrup :) I know that MichiganFarmer....or was it MIFarmer??.... I know Max was his first name... used to sell it.
Anyhow it's made throughout the state of MI. When I lived down near the Indiana border there were several homesteads that made it. And yes, all the way up to the northern part of da U.P. :) I have to search around because my family likes the dark "B" grade stuff. I found some at the Farmers Market last week and he's reserved a gallon for us (we didn't have the money 'til this payday). Remind me this evening and I'll get the business card from Gen. I believe he's charging us $45 for this gallon? Perhaps it might be economical with shipping if you're in a position to buy a couple at once?? |
Oh, shoot! Maybe I listed the wrong guy! It is Max that I bought from. I remember his REAL name, buy must have mixed up the screen name with another poster here!
Max's maple syrup is the most delicious maple syrup we've ever tasted!!! I highly recommend it :)
I bought mine from a girl on this forum this past spring
It's Michiganfarmer, yes Max is his name that sells the maple syrup here. He's my cousin but haven't talked to him lately so I don't know if he's sold out for this year yet or not.
Send him a PM & he should get back to you soon. |
I don't buy it often because of the price but our farmers market has a person who sells. Because I don't buy it often, I wouldn't know if I was paying a reasonable price or not.
Being late in the season, you may have some difficulty finding syrup now. We make it but Central Indiana had a short season this past spring so most of us are out. The prices I've seen quoted on here are about in line with what people here charge. The $19 a quart is high unless you're buying from a grocery store. Most producers don't raise their prices during the year, so if there's a jump in price, it should be in the spring, and I expect that to happen this coming spring simply because our containers, fuel, labels, labor are all going up.

Pure Maple syrup in glass 12.5 oz bottles at WM, up to about $6 now.
We make syrup. I usually start the threads about it. Ours is for home use. Max produces a TON of it.
He rocks and has the best prices around. Send him a PM. |
I run over the hill to buy it at the farm. I think it's $37 a gallon this year. You can get a great wholesale price if your willing to buy it by the 50 gallon drum. The weather hasn't been great for producing syrup the last few years so that probably explains the price increases. I think I'm just going to start making my own in the spring to save the money.
WE bought a gallon from Max (MichiganFarmer) too and it's SO good. His prices are great and they shipped it practically the second I ordered it.
I had Max send my gallon in the form of 2 half gallon jugs, which he seals. I opened one to use and poured some into a used Aunt Jemima bottle, which I washed thoroughly and stripped the label off. That bottle lives in the fridge. I sealed up the remainder in pint jars in a water bath. Those sealed jars are in the pantry until needed. I love having plenty of syrup on hand!
Got my syrup! Excellent stuff and the best deal on the planet! :)
Well....... are you going to share where you got the syrup from? :)
