When I lived in NE Kans I went to St Joe Mo every Sat. St Joe had 5 slaughter houses, Armours, Swifts, Hormel; Sietz, and another. I think there all gone now. Anyway, on Wed, theyd have there blue plater special. Fried brains and scrambled eggs. I think they were safe to eat 50 yrs ago up to 25yrs ago, but not now, do to what they feed animals, ect

stay away from wild game brains as cjd and all is too prevalent in them, as well as beef brains. I eat pork brains from time to time though. They are delicious.

Brains in many cultures (not only the poorer ones) are considered a delicacy. France prepares and serves lamb, pig, and calf brain often and in many restaurants. Personally, I haven't been able to go that route yet. However, I can't say that I would NEVER consume them if either necessary or in something that might actually taste good. I think North America is the only culture that doesn't regularly consume this part of the animal or others for that fact on a daily basis. Heck, I am still trying to become friends with liver right now.

No too much chance for disease or high chemical exposure in organ meat.

Yep, I have definitely eaten pig brains, cooked like liver - strip off the "silver skin", dipped in egg, flour, and smushed crackers, then quicked fried and served with onions and a little brown gravy. Once you get past the "ick" factor - it tastes just like liver, but then you have to like liver too...... Take care, Reb

A couple of years ago, workers in the Hormel plant here in MN started showing up with specific health problems at the Mayo Clinic. Here's a story on it.

with fava beans and a fine chianti....(that's a movie joke )
no. but I would use them for tanning. I would love to learn to tan, when I was 19 I helped an older woman once with a deer hide, it was very fun! I am a total sucker for buckskin and fringe, a la Easy Rider.

I haven't in years and years. When I was a kidlet my Mother would fry squirrel and she fried the head. As I remember the brains were pretty good, not so sure I would eat animal brains these days.

Nope no brains. No livers (filters) either. No kidneys (urine) either.

Yes. Fried sliced brain. Very tasty. A little "livery" in flavor, but very mild.
Avoid parboiling in an aluminum pot - they get some icky grey residue. Use stainless steel. Let cool before slicing and breading.
Had the calves brains in the 70s and early 80s - then they discovered Mad Cow. Allegedly it takes 15 to 25 years before symptoms show up. I'm still pretty lucid and steady-handed.
The only other brain I've had were pork brains, I prepared in 2007. They were smaller and poorly packaged - sharp bits of skull were stuck in it. Otherwise, very tasty, breaded and fried in butter or scrambled with eggs.

Nope! Plenty of good meat on the average animal so I can let the brains go.

No. Even in the 'bad days' when Mr. Hunger and I were close friends, would I eat brains. If I'd 'acquired' brains, the rest of the animal was close by and eaten first...
Only way I'd eat them now is if I were starving, and animals came with only brains and no bodies. Course, that's not going to happen.
Now, if I turned into a "Romero" zombie, yeah, I'd eat brains... I'd be craving them.

While I remember seeing cans of beef brains on my grandmother's pantry shelves (she died in '75 at 88 years of age), no way, no time, no how, nuh-uh would I eat brains from any critter these days. Ain't gonna happen.

No, I wouldn't eat any kind of brains, not even pig brains though some people deem them safe. Mad cow disease apparently is caused because of cows being fed animal by-products. Considering that some people feed animal parts and heads to their pigs and some pigs will even cannibalize their own species if given the opportunity, I'd think pig brains might be just as dangerous as cow brains.

I don't eat organ meats or brains, due to risk based decision. As a child, I also hated the taste of any organ meats. Also, do cut the fat off my meat.
