I like the roll up door idea. Never even thought of that for a barn.

I built some wooden barn doors using 2x6 frame, sides, top and across the middle. I had them lap at the corners and then cut a notch, like ship lap, and set t&G red cedar into the notches to fill in the door.
The wind was hard on these doors, each side 8 feet wide and 12 feet tall. The wind blew out the T&G by the ring shank nails and the lapped 2x6 came apart, too.

I built 2 x 2 angle iron frames for each panel. stet the door into the frame and deck screwed the angle iron to the wooden doors. Then I used short screws to refaasten the red cedar to the frames. Very heavy but sturdy.

Roller guides at the bottom edges of each door opening. In the middle, I hook the doors together with a home made latch. Sort of like a rifle bolt action, as on some old bathroom doors, but a lot bigger and a longer bolt.

I don't open mine often, but get 50-60 mph winds often.

We put slliding doors on ours and they are OK. A roll up door would be more convenient but would have also been a lot more expensive. The rail kit for this slider was around $300 and is supposed to be real heavy duty. Don't know the correct terminology, but you will need a pipe set in the ground to receive a rod to secure the door bottoms from wind. These doors were built from the extra lumber used for bracing the building during its construction.

edited to add: I can take a photo from the inside to show the door construction if needed.

I wouldn't mind seeing how that door sliding track is mounted to slide on the outside of the building.

The place I bought has a metal barn I had to finish, no plans, and I have a load of track rollers and four big door opening in front.

It's pole and metal siding construction and to mount the sliding doors inside they would have to be a foot inside to clear the telephone poles the barn is made of that frame the sides of the opening.

More pics the better.

Yeah, I agree. If anyone could post photos from inside as to how the slider is mounted...that would be great. Also I thought I remember someone saying use bolts on the door hardware to hold up better...just wondering if this would incorporate additional support from a metal brace or something to that effect? I've become obsessed with this door project now and can't concentrate while I am at work. The whole drive home I spend my time looking at others' barn doors.
