There are a few online bartering sites - I belong to barterquest. Have yet to complete an actual deal.
On the subject of taxes, you have to declare the value of a service. For instance my last really good barter deal when I traded a weekend of childcare for 6 children in exchange for electrical-rewiring of outlets. So 48 hours of child care by an L.P.N. @ a rate of $15 bartered for a licensed electrian @ a rate of $28 for 3 hours of work. Not a true trade of equal value as the children sleept for 12 of those hours, we watched a few movies, and other than the 3 a.m. crying jag by the 2 y.o. it went well. Not like I was actually pulling a couple of shifts.
Needless to say in my homesteading community we all keep the tax man in the dark.
Besides some of the great bartering tips already writen about I have found that a simple index card listing what I have to offer and what I want to obtain is a great method.
