I have also used Norton for more years then I can count. and never once had any problems. ANY machine that had McAfee , got that taken off as soon as I got the machine out of the box and on went Norton~!
In Fact, even this Mac I now have, has Norton Anti-virus protection on it~!!!!

However, I will say, we SHOULD.

Someday, there might finally be a Mac virus and it's going to catch all of us off guard.

"It’s a well known fact that most computer users believe that owning a Mac means that you are somewhat immune to the malicious threats that lurk within cyberspace," AVG starts out. "In fact, this belief has become so strong that many Mac owners do not have, or feel the need to have, antivirus software installed on their machines.

"However, the times they are a changin’ and 2009 proved a very busy year for security threats to Apple devices including the Mac OSX and iPhone. During last year Mac computers came under attack from the iServices A Trojan, which saw more than 20,000 people download an infected file from a pirate software website."

They deserve what they get. lol
And I routinely get who-knows-what in my mail box. It's usually a zip file and I'm supposed to download and launch it. I figure if you both download and launch a virus you're too stupid to be protected by anything.

Same goes for those who are downloading pirated software. That's just the universe giving them their just desserts.

I used AVG for several years but it slowed my computer down when it would scan for viruses so changed to Avast and yesterday I was looking at some pictures on a Yahoo group. (Spartan trailers) and the Avast stopped a trogan viruse or worm or what ever it's called. After the second time it stopped it I got off that site.

I also use PCtools that scans everyday for spyware. It picks up lots of spyware and I click fix and it gets rid of it.

Both are free but they have upgrades that you can buy.

We have several computers and refuse to use antivirus programs. The virus programs are annoying and act like viruses imo...causing all kinds of pop ups and then they spam you with renewal pop ups if they expire.

We just use the newest version of Windows and it prompts you anytime anything wants to download anything at all on your computer. It also has built in security and pop up blockers.

Of course, no one should click on suspicious sites or links anyways. We never have virus issues, with no anti virus progs in use.

So do any of you run a firewall in addition to your anti-virus programs?

Would not have a computer on the internet without the Firewall turned on. Never.

My feeling as well! I use the free version of Comodo Internet Security which has antivirus and a firewall.

And Malwarebytes picks up a lot more spyware, as well as several rootkit attacks that others let pass. I use it for occasional scanning.

I'm using Norton 2010 and running Malwarebytes and CCleaner about 3 times a month.

I've never liked Norton in the past, but the newer versions aren't as resource hungry as the old versions. It seems to be working for me.

I'm still surprised at the e-mail junk that my relatives send. Some of the emails are nothing but a link to someplace on the web. I always ignore those.

Spam is even worse. My old email account is filtered by Postini (a Google service?) and it frequently shows me virus-infected email messages that were automatically quarantined before they had a chance to be received by my machine. They also separately list all the spam messages that were blocked.

My other email account uses Google's standard mailfilter, which doesn't show anything unless I go looking for it.

I guess that I'm saying that I can't vouch for Norton or Thunderbird's handling of email viruses or spam because everything gets filtered before it reaches my machine.

I had Norton antivirus & webroot spysweeper for years becuase thats what they suggested when I bought my computor 5 years ago. Was having so many problems my brother suggested AVG & I talked to friends that also have AVG so I switched & I love it.
It's free & haven't had 1 problem since.
