Virgin mobile just got MiFi and it's 3g. Price is 40.00 a month UNLIMITED. Don't know if it is in your area or not. You pay 149 for the box and then 40 a month for service. Or 79 for the little thing that plugs into the computer.

We thought about getting it but the MiFi will only reach about 40 feet and we need it to reach about 125 feet. The MiFi you can use up to 5 differant thing at once. I'm hearing 3g is pretty fast.

We have Wild Blue. Better than dial up but not much.

Some times the phone companies do not advertise they have DSL lines in and if you just call their customer service they will tell you, they don't have it in your area.
This is what happen to us when we first moved here, almost 6 years ago. Until.......
DH meet a gentleman up the road that had DSL, he was an Engineer for the phone company and needed it for his work. He gave us a name of the head engineer for Qwest, talked to her and we found out we could have DSL! We are at the end of the line and some times it plays up funny but it is great to have.
Specially since I need it for my online shops. Can up load large painting files, watch free TV/Movies and so on with ease.

I have a, Land line with unlimited phone time in the US and high speed DSL, no bandwidth restrictions, is costing me $95.00 a month.

Just hope I can find something like that in Essex/King George counties in VA next year.

We have Wildblue satellite going on 3 years. The equipment is ours. THe first year we had problems connecting after a big storm and Wildblue had a technician in the area who fixed it. Earlier this year we had the dish moved from the garage roof to a pole because we had the roof redone. We are okay with the speed & service.

USCellular put up a new cell tower up the hill from us, but we can't see it from the house. They did it to provide service to the highway and didn't aim any antennae at the rest of the township. I'm not sure we would use it if it worked at the house. DH downloads a lot of stuff during the month and always stays under the FAP, but it would add up to more than 5GB which is the maximum data plan for wireless cards.

we use celcom for our internet. They loaned us a phone for a couple of days to make sure the signal would be good enough.
less than 40 a month. We were paying 21.95 for MSN on the phone line which was horrible. Our land lines are so crappy around here that we could never hook up at better than 28k.

Another fun day of searching for phone and internet. I found out for sure we are out of luck with the cable company. (not suprised)
Actually we might be able to get service from them but we would need a $1200 amplifier and pay $4 per foot for them to extend the line and the tech warned us that the further the line ran the more the quality of reception fell off. HMMM.....huge investment for crappy service..........pass and on to the next option.
We have two different companies checking to see if they can provide service.

One local internet company said they would refer to Google Maps and an in person assesment to determine if service would be available.

This is getting to be an adventure! I suggested a couple of tin cans and some string to DH but am pretty sure the reception would be limited :)

We were the first on our holler to get internet in 1996 and dialup was FAST or so we thought. Then everyone got on and it was so slow. We went with Hughesnet in 2007 and after some initial bumps I'm fairly satisfied. My big complaint is the download limit which can really restrict what you do. The quality of service seems to depend on the subcontractors they use--we've had some doozies working on our system, and after two years we finally got someone who knew what they were doing. It works fine now, except for the download limit. Cost is about $60 a month.

I want to try an AT&T air card since I have AT&T cell service but the towers don't quite reach my place. However, since the phones work in most places around the house I'm thinking a booster and air card might work. The cost would be lower than my current landline-cell-internet bill ($65, $89, $60). We don't have TV--took it out when we put in Hughesnet and have never missed it; but then, I've been without TV most of my life anyway so it wasn't difficult to give up.

So.... how in the heck would you get in touch with the right people?

fransean 09/21/10 06:54 PM

Oh well, heard from the local internet company and we can't get their broadband because there are too many trees in the way.

Next option...................I guess we will be with satelite for sure. Now if we could only get the phone company to figure out the correct department for me to talk to I believe we will be able to get a land line.

Backfourty,MI. 09/22/10 10:38 AM

We have a regular phone where we are & it is pretty secluded, but we couldn't get any kind of high speed internet through any phone service, cable or tv dish here. I finally opted for Hughes Net since that was all we could get here. So far I've been really happy with it other than the price. I think it is exspensive but there will most likely never be cable Tv where we are.

Can anyone tell me more about the cell boosters and internet service?

AT&T and Verizon seem to be the only cell phone providers in the county. Our cell phone service is spotty on our land but it works great in town.
Would it be possible to get a booster for the signal and somehow use the cell phone to connect into our wireless network for the computers? I don't currently have internet with my cell so that would mean a new phone also.
I believe the tower is about 8-10 miles away. They have them all positioned along the highway. There are a lot of trees which is why the local broadband internet company stated that we would not be able to get their signal.

Our cell company sold us both our roof-mount booster antenna ($129, which is comparable to other places) and the magic box. So long as a cell signal is available, no matter how weak, the antenna will pick up and amplify it.

For house phone service and internet, what we have is a $200 black box made by Ericsson.

The antenna plugs into it, and the phone(s) plugs into the box. I actually have our computers plugged in to it via ethernet, but the box also serves as a wireless hot spot, so I COULD connect via WiFi if I preferred.

We pay $15 for our "local" phone service and $30 for our internet. Unlimited.

For us it's been the perfect solution.

Windstream is installing DSL in our area now, we are only getting 3 Mbps, but it does okay streaming Netflix.

Thanks this was very helpful information and will help me in making my decision
