We used to have that problem, with friends, family etc. Then my G. Pyrenees grew up and put a stop to that. We have glass sliders, they worry he'll go through the glass.
It did kinda bother me also, 3 boys it was grand central, plus family since it's the old farm. Now we usually get a call first or they honk their horn, to see if 1. we are home or 2. if the dog is in the house.
We do not lock our doors, though we've been here since before most & people know we won't put up with no funny business. The dogs help, a lot.

Plus we have a fence round our house with gate latches no one can figure out, that makes them give up real fast.

Hon?
Is that you??
Seriously, this could describe our place, also. I can't imagine living somewhere that I felt the need to lock the doors when I'm both home AND awake.
Though truly, we NEVER lock the doors. So make a note of that guys--If you can find us, everything you can grab is yours.
Though I will mention, there's only one way in and our driveway is a quarter mile long. The dogs always notice a vehicle well before it's close to the house and we ARE armed...

This is just a cultural issue. It is common in many places to walk into a porch, then knock on the door to the house. If you were raised there, you might think it is normal.
I'm sure in a large city is isn't a common thing. Different areas have different cultures.
We wave and talk to everyone like they are friends here in the country whether we know them or not. That is the culture here. But in a city, people NEVER talk to strangers. And neither is right or wrong, it is just the culture of the area.
These people don't know they are offending you because they feel it is normal behavior. You will have to let them know to wait for you to answer the door by posting a sign.
Just as a side note, if people would do that here, it wouldn't bother us at all. Our culture in this area is just more open and trusting than some other areas.

We don't lock. We have dogs and an attack goat. No one would open the door seeing the German Shepmix and hearing him along with the other 2 bark heads. He would be seen...but first they would have to get by Gretta.
Not only do people not just walk in...they call first.

Gretta doesn't look like she has much of a sense of humor.
You could get past my goats by waving a bucket of grain at them. They'd be your friends for life. If you offered them a handful of mineral supplement, they'd happily *help* you break in.

Neither would I think something is out of the norm.
I grew up with a outside porch and IF a person did not come to the inside door you never knew anybody was there. And that in itself is not good.
As for knocking on the outside door no way would anybody hear that person. So people always came to the inside door, and if nobody heard them there it was not uncommon at all to have a person open the door and yell Is Anybody Here?
Sounds normal to me. As I have done that on different occasions myself throughout the years if stopping at somebodies house and nobody seemed to hear me or be around. No big deal.

Gretta definitely looks mean! I have an early alert system with the dogs and the geese and the guineas so nobody ever sneaks up on our house!

Not many people will come into my house even if I ask them in. I have a big old scared up lizard who waits inside the front door. You can see him in the window before coming inside. Also have an attack lizard somewhere around here. She gets sort of cranky when she gets hungry. She stays hungry about all of the time. Made a mistake when I handed her a bird the other day. She hit my thumb along with the bird. Felt like I hit my thumb with a hammer. It is still swollen up and several different colors. She is also very fast and can jump pretty high.
Like I said, not many will come inside during the day, night time is out of the question.

I can't imagine just wandering thru someone's house until you found someone...maybe that's from growing up in the city, where everyone had to unbolt all the locks on the inside just to open the door to see who it was-makes you wait on the porch a while. )
I know it sounds strange, but we never lock our doors or our windows, unless we're going to be gone for an extended length of time. For one thing, it wouldn't make any difference if someone really wanted in cuz we live in an old mobile home, so it doesn't take much to break the door in, or force the window open. I'd rather have someone walk in to take my stuff than do actual damage to the house, since it's a rental. Stuff can be replaced, but repairs cost more. We only have 1 close neighbor, and a storage complex and industrial area across the highway. I can't stand the idea of never having the door open to let in air, or the blinds up and windows open in summer. With the number of windows we've got, it would take 15 minutes just to get them all shut and locked to go anywhere. I moved to the 'country' from the city where you had to lock everything all the time, and still had my car stolen! We've only had a couple issues with 'wackos' running around the area, but we had warning and got the guns out. Still didn't close the door, cuz it was hot out. Anyway, our 'entry' is actually the back door, into the laundry room and then right into the kitchen. Even with the door standing wide open most people yell from the doorway to get our attention (we can't see the door from anywhere but the kitchen). Only people who wander in unannounced are family members, my daughter's friends and random cats, and except for the cats, everyone announces their presence as they come in. We can generally see people coming up the driveway, since it's curved around to the road, and we're usually into the kitchen to look out the window before they can even park. That and our dog and several at the neighbors' make a lot of noise.
I'm grateful every day to live where I do, after where I used to. No job could ever offer me enough money to go back to a place where I have to live in a sealed box, afraid of everything, ever again.

Lock your doors. I don't know what would possess people into thinking that it is OK to enter someone else's home uninvited, but it seems to be a mindset where you live.
You might consider putting a gate across your drive, so they have to walk farther to get to your door.

Its not the neighbors we lock our doors for (well me at least) its everyone else. It only takes once of someone getting in who shouldn't.
25 years ago I never locked my doors, now I wouldn't even be inside the house without the doors being locked

normally i have the door locked too but there are so many strong burly men working here for me right now no one would dare come around that didn't belong here. i'm keeping the doors unlocked for them for coffee etc.
i dont keep them locked against my neighbors either. i know all of my neighbors on this street and other streets in the immediate vicinity.(i talk to everybody and his dog and i'm on the walking route to the lakes).there have been home invasions not too far away so you can't be too careful. it's not only the city anymore. i'm being more careful out at my place in the country also.~Georgia.

Really? On what? I don't really remember interacting with you.
Also...I don't think I've ever asked to have a thread pulled because I didn't like the nature of the responses I got. I have no issues with being snotty, but if you're going to indulge, for goodness's sake don't run sobbing to the mods to delete your thread when someone says something you don't like.
Great post from you though...vintage junior high. The only thing better is the classic: "I know you are but what am I?".

LOL(sorry, but this is funny, just imagining it)!
I would rather rely upon the ol' 12 gauge shotgun, than a lizard.....
But each to their own.

The shot gun and 357 are a backup. I don't even have to be there or awake for Bill and Betty Sue to do their job.
It might sound funny but a 25lb lizard hanging fron someplace right under the belt doesn't get too many laughs. Especially in the dark. A black lizard is pretty hard to see in the dark. Betty Sue is for night time guarding. Bill is for daytime.
