About 6 or 7 years ago, i acquired a sat pic of my property from USGS. For just a few bucks, they printed it out with the name of the farm across the bottom. I think it was like 18" by 24', or something. I framed it in a generic poster frame. Unfortunately, the tornado took it in 2008.

Just wanted to let y'all know that USGS does this type of stuff, in case you'd like to have a nice photo of your property to hang on a wall.

Disclaimer: I haven't looked into it since I had mine done. They probably still do it, but I imagine prices have gone up some.

Well of my 11 I have about 3 or so acres of Oak and Cedar I plan to leave, maybe thin out a bit and harvest a few that have died for fire wood. Winters are mild enough here that you can get by easily with a small amount of wood even if your using wood heat alone, which I won't be.

I also have 20-30 very young loblolly pines in the pasture, most of them are going away as soon as I can get around to it, with a few staying just for some shade in the back of the property.

No more than any airplane that flies over.... Or helo that flies over looking for pot fields.. Or the space station.. Or any number of other things..

It's not like this is new, most folks could go buy aerial photos of their land from their county or USDA for about 60 years now that are just as detailed if not moreso.

True! If someone is planning on robbing you, and has been doing their research, they can get the info... now, it's just plumb easy.

Problem is, any bad guy can use google maps, and google street view, on an opportunistic basis... if they're driving down the road and see the family towing the boat to the lake, they can get the address, scout out the back yard and sometimes actually see into the garage (if the door was open when they took the pics) to see what they can steal.

I remembered this post from awhile ago and how interesting I thought it was to see everyones aerial views. And it took me this long to figure out how to do it so here is ours.

The wedge piece at the bottom we just traded an old pickup for and it gave us an acre of woods and a small pasture for the goats. This pic is several years old and doesnt show the new pole barn but otherwise its pretty much the same.

Salmonslayer,
Check out this mapping tool from the University of Missouri, just plug in your zip code and locate your property. In addition to the regular satellite map your have multiple overlays for topography, soil types, measure area and distance and a bunch of other stuff.
I used this web site to plan out my cross-fencing and the measurements were bang on accurate.

Great link, Mr. Twain, but y'all look at this!

http://ims2.missouri.edu/tool/maps/default.aspx

On the sidebar, you can select AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY, and if you go there, there is all sorts of information for you, and anyone else to peruse.

It's not personal info.

Ours is the mostly green long rectangle. Goes back into the trees at the top of the hill. Checked out the elevation. It goes from 553 at the rd to 783 at the back. KNEW it was a steep hill, lol. Its an older pic, tho. I have NO idea what those things are behind the barn

Looks like a nice spread, I am partial to those long rectangular lots and yours looks a lot like ours. We have it set up in layers, farmhouse barn gardens and barnyard at the front, the pond, then pasture, then woodlot, then the coveted deer plot.

And thanks for the links Twain and Jean, I am checking them out.

But the Government STOPS Google from showing anything closer or clearer. But you know dern well THEY can do it If they have a cause to do so.
Hi,

I'm one of the architects for the ground systems for the spacecraft that took a lot of these pictures. Note "DigitalGlobe" at the bottom of some of the pics.

In 2005, the spacecraft that went up had resolution of about two feet. So one dot/pixel is about two feet across. And that was the best possible at the time - and this was a low orbit spacecraft. And, at the time, I was told that it was unlikely to get any better (but I emailed a friend to check). So the footprint thing is unlikely.

It is true that there are areas that are not allowed to be photographed. And there are areas where there are resolution limitations.

Most pics don't turn out so good because of clouds. And rural areas tend to not get many pictures taken because people aren't as willing to buy them.

This one spacecraft has a 93 minute orbit. And the average time is goes by is at about 10:30. Because of a variety of factors, it can take a pic of a point of interest about once every two to three days.

Shade is critical, especially if you have black cattle. Heat stress in cattle is underappreciated, so let me share a few articles:

Here is our 5 acres. The dark spots in our pasture are trees. We have a nice little area of woods near the house that the chickens like to hang out in. We are completely surrounded by our neighbor's cow pastures and dense woods across the street.

It's pretty there. If you go up and grab the little orange person in the upper left hand corner, you can drag and drop him on any of the blue colored roads. Then you can "drive" down the street. It doesn't let you turn onto you road, but you can get as close as the intersection with the paved road.

Ours is little compared to some of your wonderful spreads, but we like it well enough and our 5 acres keep us quite busy . This year the land to the north of us is planted in corn, last year it was soy beans. Across the road from us is a horse breeder, nice to see the horses when we look out the window. *Love* Google Earth, we used it extensively when looking for property to buy.
