We've had lots of luck with a 4kw Onan from an old motorhome. They're designed for longer and heavier runs than most portables you'll come across and can be had for a few hundred buck.

Might be something worth looking into.

Thanks for all the advice. I think DH wants to try fixing the one we have first if I can find a carburetor for it and it is not to expensive. If not I guess we will buy a new one.
