I'm in Northern AZ where there are lots of second homes and rural vacation and hunting cabins. My home is rural (maybe even very rural). There is rough forest road that is in front of my property and seasonally we'll see people drive by during the day hunting or enjoying the forest. Certain times of the year, people don't usually drive by except for maybe one or two local vehicles for 3 or 4 months during the snowy season. Every winter though, there's always one vehicle that catches my attention driving by during the day or in the middle of the night when there's a only a little snow on the ground and no fresh tracks into my property. They'll drive by slow a few times and sometimes stop out front checking things out. My house is ugly so they aren't admiring a beautiful, rustic cabin. Turning on all of the lights in the house gets rid of them at night and stepping out on the porch gets rid of them during the day. If I didn't live here full time, it would have been broken into by now.

I would report it to the cops anyway, but my gut says if all they took was food and were trying on clothes, shoes, etc. it sounds more like a hiker or someone passing through that was starving and maybe cold.

Maybe illegals making their way through the area and were trying to "be nice" while still taking what they needed???

As a hiker / backpacker, I have asked myself if I was starving and came across someone's cabin in the woods how would I handle it??? My stomach would be telling me to break in, but my personal values would be saying to at least leave a note saying I'm sorry and explain why I broke in. (at the very least)

Breaking and entering is the law, if they took something or not is second to the fact.

Sorry to hear this, hope you get the peace of mind you need to feel ok with leaving your place in the future.

FWIW, one of my best friends once had what is known around here as a "river cabin". It is just a cabin located on high ground, usually in the woods, near the river.

He had a sweet deal on the place...it was $50 a month and a promise to keep a watch over the land.

He says that he will never again buy or rent a river cabin. He says that river cabins are broken into on a weekly basis, whether it is just kids or teenagers, or grown adults looking to steal something of value.

We try not to stop in front of folks gates or houses/outbuildings, but we do slow down so not to spook their animals or raise to much dust when it's dry out.

Maybe they're waiting to see how much they'll get for your gun before returning for it?
