Yup, lots of hoops.
I laugh about it but I probably couldn't get my job I have now if I had to apply for it now.

Ah.. one of my favorite areas. I used to do merchandising that sent me from Jefferson City, up through Morristown, Greeneville and into Rogersville. I'd stop every so often at the diner kitty corner from WalMart and get a shake. Stayed away when the car went through the wall for a little while though

Lamoncha- I hope he get it, but i'm with you- with a brother who is on pain meds just to function, who spent several months job searching- I wish you well.

The job I have now required a drug screen. I passed as I don't take any medications and only declared what I was prescribed for a tooth extraction. There are two types of drug screens commonly used:

1. The urine test
2. The hair test

I've had both performed as part of a hiring process. The hair test can go back 5 years and even if you are bald - hair "can" be found to shave for the test. It is a much harder test to pass than the urine test and more costly to administer.

Good luck with the hiring process, hope your husband gets the job!

I hate to raise hopes, but I'm an optimist on a general kind of day, so....

That the doc cleared him to work with caution...since they already offered the job (which they don't do in this economy unless they REALLY like what they see in the interviews)...I'd be optimistic. BUT I don't know what kind of job he's being interviewed for. If it's OTR trucking, with lifting involved, then maybe not But if it's Fork Lift operator in the warehouse, then I'd be hopeful.

The VA medical sounds like an excellent way to go. If he's got a case for disability, even if it's a temporary thing until they can clear up the pain (if possible) it's still $$ in the bank! And the VA is certainly easier to work with than the normal SSD.

A follicle test does not go back five years and not all labs can take samples from the pubic or underarm regions. The test captures six months or so worth of 'time' and the substances screened for (as with urine screens) must register whatever pre-determined amount to show on the screen. Usually within ninety days of no use, a substance will fall below positive range, depending on the user's history.

While it is harder to skew the results on a follicle test, the only drug screen accepted by federal courts is one done by a company that spins it's own assays on site, using refrigerated, unadulterated samples.

Guess LabCorp didn't give me the correct information, not that it mattered since I don't take any drugs, even prescription ones. I do know that even people with shaved heads can be hair tested as several people where I worked had the test done. Pubic or underarm hair was used instead of hair from the scalp. According to our friend Wikki:

Hair drug testing

Hair drug testing can detect drug use over a much longer period of time[23], which is often used for highly safety-critical positions where there is zero tolerance of drug usage.[24] Standard hair follicle screen covers a period of 30 to 90 days. The growth of hair is usually at the rate of 1.5 inches per month. The hair sample is cut as close to the scalp and 80 to 120 strands of hair are needed for the test. In the absence of hair on the head, body hair can be used as an acceptable substitute[23]. Even if the person being tested has a shaved head, hair can also be taken from almost any other area of the body. This includes facial hair, the underarms, arms, and legs.
Though it is often claimed that hair test cannot be tampered with, it has been shown that this is simply untrue. For example, THC does not readily deposit inside epithelial cells so it is possible for cosmetic and other forms of adulteration to reduce the amount of testable cannabinoids within a hair sample [11]

I understand what you're saying- I operated an A&D facility and we were the ONLY place that did follicles so I have over two years experience. Labcorp was my lab of choice. And by 'not all places do testing via body hair' I didn't mean the lab- I meant the clinic that actually takes the sample. None of my sites, our only physical health type connection to the clients being the screens, would take the sample from elsewhere. We just weren't set up for that.

And I'm still crossing my fingers! (hard to type this way, but...)

I would like to suggest that you urge hubby to contact the VA today. No matter what. Even if he GETS the job, he'll have a start on any claims that may arise. Like..what would happen if he gets the job, and then the pain gets WORSE? And that could happen. And talk to his pain doctor to see if there is any way to start a 1)lower dose, or 2)another prescription...to try to wean off the pills. I know it's hard (trust me...been there, flat on my back unable to move 'cuz of pain, if anyone touched me I pain shot through me like an electric shock....used pills until I could get off them and TRUST the pain wouldn't incapacitate me).

anyway. GOOD LUCK! may God reveal his plan to you soon!
