I'm coastal Tx, and I certainly wouldn't eat a fig left laying in the heat and humidity for two or three days. Ick.

I wouldn't eat a fig, willingly, at any point; I collected over 1000 recipes in a spirited attempt to make them palatable to me but could never get past the texture and cloyingly (to me) taste. However, I raised them for the love of the quirky plants for many years and, after much trial and error research, did "fig"ure out how to store and ship them fresh long after "2 or 3 days"; oddly, people who loved these nasty things were impressed.

I contend that Rich is waiting too long to pick the flowers; stinging insects will not be attracted unless they're "past".

Possible, but I don't think so. My grapes are just starting to ripen and the bees and wasps are all over them too. Last year and the year before I didn't have this problem.

I need to take a picture so you can see just how many wasps and bees are on the figs. And that's any fig that is even close to being ripe.

Usually I have trouble with birds, but no so much this year. I've found and destroyed 3 ground wasp nests in the last few weeks. For some reason, my property is just overrun with stingies this year.

I know what caused all the wasps and bees to congregate on my figs.

Drought!

Had 3 straight days of rain last week and now there are just a few wasps and bees on the figs and almost none on the grapes. Guess they were using the figs as their water supply.
