SirDude 07/21/10 09:29 PM

Are you normal?

I'm not, but really, my question is more of are you having a "normal" season so far?

I do not know if this summer has been a normal summer for the VA / DC area, but this humidity is way worse then what I am use to in FL. So I got to wondering how every one else's summer has been going?

Hope a lot better then here! :badmood:

NickieL 07/21/10 09:38 PM

no, not normal here. I don't mind heat, but the humidity is a killer.

GrannyG 07/21/10 09:39 PM

We have had more rain than usual for the month of July, and the humidity has been something else....hot, hot, hot....the grapes are ready now to be picked, it is early for them to be purple and ready now...the zukes are beautiful, all leafy, lots of blossoms and no fruit....tomatoes are very slow, my brandy wines have not produced at all, just all stem and leafy....yes, it is an unusual year in my opinion.

krische1012 07/21/10 09:52 PM

Much more humid then it should be..it is making it very hard for me to get things done outside :( I have to change clothes multiple times a day!

SirDude 07/21/10 10:12 PM

I was kind of getting the feeling the humidity was a little out of wack for a lot of places.

That's funny, because I had to change clothes a couple of times while working indoors! My friends keep the A/C - temp set at 80+, so doing anthing other then sitting down makes me break a sweat! :grumble:

10kids 07/21/10 10:24 PM

We rarely have humidity and none to speak of this year, but we had a very cold and wet spring, so everything is late, but I've never seen so many strawberries, raspberries and blackberries...clearly they loved the moisture. I'm on the east side of the state, where it is usually fairly dry. It seems we have had more wind this year than I can ever remember.

AngieM2 07/21/10 10:36 PM

N. AL is being much hotter for this time of year, and a goo healthy 60 dew point to about 70 dew point. Get out of the air conditioned car at 7:30 in the morning at work, and the eye glasses fog over with the humidity.

The weather guys are saying 3rd hottest since record keeping started.

Callieslamb 07/21/10 10:36 PM

I am not sure what normal is....I just hope it isn't like last year.

Patt 07/21/10 11:33 PM

Bad Summer here too. We took off and got super hot and dry back in June and then got a ton of rain in July. Humidity has been high here too. We have had heat indexes of 110 to 115 ever since the middle of June.

newfieannie 07/21/10 11:55 PM

not good here either. it was so hot tonight i had to wait until dark to water. i've already been in bed but it's too hot to sleep.this is why i'm still up at 2am.supposed to rain tonight.a thunderstorm might clear it up. i've had enough . i cant wait until autumn. ~Georgia.

Bearfootfarm 07/22/10 12:03 AM

It's been dryer than normal here.
Temps are 95-100, but that IS normal for July and August

CrashTestRanch 07/22/10 12:11 AM

well currently @ 10:09 pm it's:

RIGHT NOW 98°F
HIGH Today: 105°F
LOW Today: 89°F

pancho 07/22/10 12:37 AM

Guess I am far from normal. I like the heat and humidity.
I can get a lot more work done in 98 degree heat and 90% humidity
than I get done when it is cool and dry.

rambler 07/22/10 01:00 AM

I'll assume you are asking about weather, and not me personally - probably can figure your own answer for me personally. :)

Actually the past 3-4 years have been abnormal.

_This_ year is kinda back top normal for southern MN, lot of storms, been hiding in the basement a couple times, hail, heavy rains, dry periods, some days unbearable hot, others nice & cool & dry.

That is what normal used to be around here. We haven't had that for a while.

The hail repair vans are still set up all over town; the 2 lumber yards are very busy ordering shingles & siding to replace the hail damaged house coverings.

ChristieAcres 07/22/10 01:08 AM

Me, normal LOL, way out of the box, oh you meant our weather...kidding around, but truthfully, it isn't normal either! January was blessed with El Nino, 3 nice unseasonably warm weeks (planted a lot of Garlic, thanks). We then continued with an extended Winter, late Early Spring, didn't seem to warm to regular Spring temps, then straight to Summer (????). Okay, you can call it summer, but here you go:

At night 40s or 50s (not normal for summer), then mornings in the low 60s (not normal, again), warming up to 70s, 80s, and 90s, just depends on the day. Normally? We have warmer nights/mornings, but I will take it and not complain. Considering what some of the rest of you are dealing with, this is a walk in the park!

The garden is finally really happy since temps exceeded 60F during the day! Of course, it helped when we got out of night temps of 30s...

Us? Sometimes, we light the wood stove in the mornings (heats our water), then switch the valve to the passive solar set up in the afternoons! So, that also means multiple clothing changes... sweater in the mornings, regular clothing in the early afternoon, but by the middle of the afternoon, I can wear a tank/shorts!

RiverPines 07/22/10 03:06 AM

This is Wisconsin, all extremes are normal here! :)

willow_girl 07/22/10 06:53 AM

I've only been here 3 years, so it's hard to gauge "normal," but the locals tell me it warmed up fast this spring. I had rose-of-Sharons blooming by the end of June!

BetsyK in Mich 07/22/10 06:57 AM

They are telling us on the local weather this is the hottest summer ON RECORD. I believe it and I also believe that it is the most humid on record. Everything loving the extra rain we are getting in July, it can stop any time now, the lawn mowing is getting old. We got first and second cutting hay in between rain showers, but no week or two long drying spells like past years. Global warming? or just mother nature doing her thing?

Rita 07/22/10 07:11 AM

Stinking hot here, not much different than Florida this summer.

Our Little Farm 07/22/10 07:18 AM

Right now it is 73F and it will get up to about 87F here, tonight it will be around 64 F and there is a lovely breeze on my back porch right now :).

We havent had to use air conditioning at all, which is good, because we don't have any! LOL

I stayed 2 hrs away for a few weeks and it was a completely different story, much hotter and more humid.

Got to like those mountain breezes!

FarmersDaughter 07/22/10 07:47 AM

Not normal here this year. Record rainfall amounts in May and June, and now it's been very hot and humid. We usually have hot and humid weather in late July and August, so that's not unusual, but there seems to have been many more days of excessive heat warnings than we usually have.

The heavy rain in the early part of summer didn't do my garden any favors...the weeds loved it, have early blight on the tomatoes, and some things just got drowned. Now it's so hot and humid that I'm not getting caught up well. Just picking what I can from amongst the weeds, unfortunately.

Kathleen in WI 07/22/10 07:50 AM

Me, normal? Um...no.

Regarding the weather, I have noticed that it seems to be wonky everywhere for the last few years. We have been moving around a lot in the last few years and everywhere we end up, the locals say "this has been an unusual year." So either the weather all over the country is doing odd things lately or weird weather is just following me around. In which case it would be my fault. I apologize.

As a side note, this has been a beautiful summer here in Colorado. A couple of hot days but wonderful over all. Could use some more rain though.

Not picking on you personally, BetsyK, you just happen to be in MI too and bring up the local weather. . . But I laugh everytime I hear that this summer is the hottest on record. Because compared to 2007, it hasn't been that hot. I don't believe what the news says. I have my own weather notes for at least the 7 years I have lived on my current place (but spent all my life in MI) and this summer has not had: as many 90 degree days, or as many high humidity days, as we had just a few years ago. My oldest son graduated in 2007 and it was 90 degrees on his graduation day (June 3rd), stayed in the 90's all that week, was hotter than heck at his open house on June 9th, and stayed hot and humid for nearly another month. So far this summer we've hit 90 maybe twice??

I work outside, and I know when I'm sweating at 7:00 a.m. just walking around and when I'm not. I'm pretty familiar with what 'normal' weather is for any time of the year and what is not. To me, this summer hasn't been above normal for heat or humidity.

The last two summers have been abnormally wet here. Usual weather pattern is to get rain in early June, then not again until late July (because VBS is always the last week of July and we always get a good thunderstorm during VBS week! Also it's always dry going into Fair week, but wet coming out--and Fair used to be the end of July although a few years ago it was moved to the first week of August). Last year was cooler than normal as well as wet, this year has been warmer than last year but no way has it been the hottest ever in my life.

pheasantplucker 07/22/10 08:46 AM

My wife is very sensitive to humidity. I recall we were in Canada a few years back and some of the folks were complaining about the humidity...I think it was hovering between 15 and 20%. Here in our hometown, we get 70-80% humidty frequently. I personally don't feel the humidity until the temp gets in the high 70's or low 80's...then I feel it. My wife and I will be out for a walk, and it's 60 % and she'll say, "Gosh I can't stand this humidity"...I'm oblivious.

mnn2501 07/22/10 08:53 AM

Got hotter about a month before it should have -- pretty much preventing my garden from doing anything decent -- had the best garden ever last year and one of the worst this year. High 90's temps should come in late June around here, not in mid May.

DamnearaFarm 07/22/10 08:53 AM

Not normal here either. Went from winter to summer, with no noticeable spring. HOT temps- we just had a few weeks with temps in the mid ninties. After a dry spell, our humidity is off the charts. Just got back from an aborted camping trip with the kids. Thunderstorms every night- so hard the rain forced it's way in through the seams of the tents and nothing (people included) ever really dried out. Always felt clammy. Of course it's still the same weather, but being able to escape the humidity inside occasionally helps.

BetsyK in Mich 07/22/10 09:14 AM

Kris, just reporting what I'm hearing on the Grand Rapids news station. I don't keep records other than I know I'm not spending as much time outside during the day and sweating a whole lot more than in my former years. Course, I'm getting old so maybe that's why. Anyway, I've been miserable, thank goodness for the overhead fan I had put in last winter the circulate the heat, it has been a life saver.

Wolf mom 07/22/10 09:23 AM

Much cooler than the "norm". Nights finally got above 50 degrees about a month ago, so the vegie garden is getting a very slow start. And for a place with a short growing season - that's not good. Mid 80's during the day.

The only thing this very cool summer is good for here is the electricity bill and sleeping. :)

SlaterCreek 07/22/10 09:24 AM

Somewhat noraml here in Northern Colorado although weve had a couple of cool day's. Garden is doing well. On my 2nd batch of pickles and need to replant for the fall soon.
Later,
SlaterCreek

chickenista 07/22/10 09:31 AM

We are the 'new normal'.
When I was a kid the summers were warm, but you could get away with a long sleeve shirt at night.
Those days are gone.
Now I expect 100* during the day with the heat index well above 105* and no rain.. ever.
I get what I expect.
So.. I suppose I am normal..

fordy 07/22/10 12:25 PM

.............Very UNusual level of humidity in northcentral tx for this time of year ! Usually , by june 15th. high pressure has set up and it is just very hot until the middle of sept. with temps unusally running around 95 to 98 f each day . The humid conditions are due too moisture moving up from the gulf of mexico , much further north , than they it normally does . Seems the northeast has had a spate of high pressure decend upon them for weeks at a time ! , fordy:coffee:

salmonslayer 07/22/10 12:37 PM

We have had weeks in the mid to high 90s with high humidity and no relief in sight but the garden loves it (except the tomatoes). I have used it to justify putting off several onerous projects!

jlrbhjmnc 07/22/10 12:39 PM

This is a historically hot summer here - June was WAY above normal. We even had a week of high '80's and some '90's back in April! The whole state (NC) has been that way for the summer. We're grateful to be in Western NC; Eastern NC is cooking worse than we are.

Ramblin Wreck 07/22/10 12:44 PM

Our past Winter was very typical of the what I remember from my youth. We had several months of cold weather, enough to freeze over the creek. I had to break through it so that the livestock could have water. Spring was a little warmner than normal, with lots of rain when it did rain. Then it was dry for most of June, which is not typical and has taken a huge toll on the garden. July has been very hot and humid, which is normal.

ronbre 07/22/10 03:20 PM

we have had a highly unusual amount of heat since March of this year and we have had a drought going now going on 2 years..so nope..we aren't normal..however my garden is fantastic...we did lose all of our fruit blossoms and a lot of other blossoms to a late frost on Mother's day..was 20 degrees F for 3 straight days

highlands 07/22/10 06:03 PM

Never strive to be normal.

lemonthyme7 07/22/10 06:55 PM

It has been very hot and humid in PA. The last few weeks were very dry as well and we had to water the gardens. Thankfully we have had several good rains now and the gardens are doing well. The humidity is what kills me. I know a few people that love it but they're very skinny (and crazy)! LOL!
BetsyK in Mich - I heard it was the hottest summer on record worldwide. Maybe that is the report you heard?

mtzircon 07/22/10 07:25 PM

Northern New England

I would say that the summer has been a little early this year. The heat and humidity usually shows up in August. Around the fourth this month we were in the 90's with dew points in the high 60's. That lasted about two weeks roughly. Last night we had a round of thunder storms go through and there were three confirmed tornadoes. That is unusually for a state that normally only gets two per year. The normal highs have shown up finally and I breath a sigh of relief. The humidity is what takes me out.
The garden was a little slow starting out, because of rain and lack of temps. It has made up for it lately. The Tomatoes are growing like weeds , which I am happy, because there was none last year.

SirDude 07/22/10 08:49 PM

This is interesting, some of ya are saying that the tomatoes are doing poorly and others are saying they are doing well with all the humidity. What gives?

Are some getting more rain while being humid and others are just high humidity, but not raining all that much? Kind of like where I am in VA / DC. It's humid, but not a lot of wind and haven't seen much rain. I guess that's the biggest difference from Florida. I'm use to some kind of sea-breeze around rush-hour / sunset, but not here.

salmonslayer 07/22/10 09:31 PM

We got a ton of tomatoes all at once but the humidity (I think) has made the fungal diseases go wild.
