Why would anyone buy meat from a door to door salesman?

JuliaAnn 07/14/10 11:45 PM

I think someone like that is going to end up getting shot....

tamsam 07/15/10 01:56 AM

We have them here but they are very polite. When you tell them you aren't interested they thank you and leave. I have tried some of their steaks and they are really good. A lot of older folks buy from them. I guess it must be a completely different group but I don't remember the name on the trucks but the company is local. Sam

We have them stop here once in a great while...Only one time did I have someone who persisted after I said I wasn't interested. I just told him that we were vegetarians then went in the house and locked the door.

One stopped at my mom's and tried to pressure her into buying his meat. Once he finally figured it out that she really DID mean no, he asked if she could at least fix him and his buddy a sandwich because it was lunchtime! She told him where to find the nearest convenience store so he could buy his own lunch, and promptly locked the door.

When I lived in the city we would get them, tamalles too. But I was always weary of buying meat or food from anyone's trunk LOL

Patt 07/15/10 10:49 AM

We have had them stop here, I just tell them we produce all our own meat and then point out the animals. :) Works just fine! I always found it strange that they drive through an area literally lined with cattle farms to try and sell over priced steaks.

dezingg 07/15/10 10:49 AM

I'd charge them with any legal infractions that their aggression causes and then very quickly find out where they are getting the meat from! (to verify that it isn't stolen meat)

our small town implimented a door to door sale policy anyone selling door to door that does not have a buisiness in town with an address , has to register at city hall before going door to door so that if complaits come in the city has thier info and can contact them

this has almost completely stopped the meat trucks , if they have nothing to hide then they can go register i don't even think they put any cost to registert.

it was very popular as a consmer protection measure.

I bought $346 worth of them once. We really didn't think they were that great. I won't do it again. We did like the preformed burgers, but not the NY strip steaks nor the aged ones.

They come door to door in this area, and have for many years, maybe 25 or so. Some are very polite and considerate. A couple have been really pushy. I think it just depends on the salesman himself, not the company.

They sell from refrigerated company trucks here.

There have been problems over the years with people like this. I saw a poster one year warning of this. Another year there was an article in the newspaper. One time one came to our place and was very uncivil. I reported him to the police. He did not come back. He had Maine license plates. We're in Vermont. I don't cotton buying from an unknown stranger from so far away.

Big crackdown on unlicensed door to door meat sales here and adjoining states,
residents are being warned....
A more in depth article on it below.

We had really aggressive meat salesmen here once (luckily DH was home too) they Chose to come down a driveway marked Security Dogs/No Trespassing, to our house which cannot be seen from the road and proceed to unpack their meats all over my porch while the 5 big dogs were growling, barking and threatening to take their meat lol They were persistent, took almost an hour to get them to go, all the while their "amazing meats" were warming in the sunshine of my deck.

JuliaAnn 07/15/10 03:16 PM

Ok, now my morbid mind has taken a turn for the worse...

*What kind* of meat is this? Maybe imported political dissidents from China? Victims of some sort of human trafficking? Makes me wonder why they are so impatient to unload their meat.

Seriously though, if ANYONE was that aggressive to me on my property, they would indeed be invited to leave at the point of a weapong. And it wouldn't take an hour, either. I'd be too concerned about the safety of MY family to allow such behavior. Who knows what people have in mind when they are THAT aggressive.

We had two guys in a van with a chest freezer in back show up this spring. They said they had been coming to our town for years. I'm out driving three counties every day and I know most all the semi drivers, fedex and UPS, delivery and service guys by sight. Never seen them or their van. They wanted to sell us chicken, pork and beef. We pointed out the herds of chickens and turkeys across the fence, and the hog pens. So they went to work on the beef. Unpacked it all. Then wanted a bunch of money for it. Nope. And then they took back the pamphlet I had grabbed so I could research them. They said it was their last one. I ran in and wrote down the name and number they had stuck on the van with vinyl letters. I could find no trace of them anywhere in Idaho. The meat was vacuum packed and boxed very nicely and looked nice, but I would never buy it.

What a novel concept...
wish some of these folks would show up here...
I'd try and convince them to get out of their vehicle... and come into the house... if there's any scent at all on their freezers, my big dogs would do their darndest to get in and relieve him of his meat.
Problem is, very few folks are willing to step out of their vehicles....:D

taylorlambert 07/15/10 03:46 PM

Alot of them ride the backroads and steal when they arent selling meat. Had an old man in about and 88 Dodge Ram truck come by. He was caught late with a bunch of hogfeeders and AC units he had stolen. Hehad also stolen some stufffrom a house down the road to.

watcher 07/15/10 03:51 PM

I discovered meeting them in the drive with a 120# dog at your side and a handgun on your hip and they tend to understand "No think you." very quickly.

Tobster 07/15/10 03:53 PM

The 'salesman' got 40 days in jail. What was the charge? If the woman being interviewed gave a similar testimony in court, 40 days seems like he got off light.

Ravenlost 07/15/10 04:02 PM

They'd have to walk a half mile to get to my house. We have a current heat index of 106 degrees so I don't think that's going to happen!

ldc 07/15/10 04:41 PM

I've had 2 to my door in 15 years, and I live in the only real shack (I'm the caretaker) on the street, among nice houses. Am 80 ft off the street, behind trees. From what I could see, there was no refrigeration...Anyway, I yelled and screamed about, "Go find a house that can afford it!" and let the "killer" doxie out. Works every time! ldc
