Well I am several hundred miles from Water Moccasin/Cottonmouth range, but my Mother and I killed one in our yard about a month ago...took the dead snake to the U of I Herp dept, they gave us a positive ID and noted the long. and lat. of our farm for their records.

Ravenlost, the pic I took of our snake is almost exactly like the pic you posted here!

Black snakes have pretty small heads for the size of their body. They do like eggs but usually aggressive chickens can be rough on them.
