Most of the green roofs I have seen (in person or on TV) have used small, low growing plants and not sod. Sorry I don't know the names of the plants, but I do remember that they pretty much took care of themselves. Meaning they're the type of plants that don't grow too tall or adjust to the local climate.

I would do a search on Planet Green's "Renovation Nation" they toured the roof on Chicago's city hall building and they have show at least one house during the planting possess. Or look on YouTube????
