I'm not sure how many are thinking about attending the herb association conference. That will be held on Sat., Oct. 9th and Sun., 10th at Jackson's Mill. I believe there's a charge to attend the presentations. How many want to meet then?

Another possibility is the fireman's rodeo in Glenville on the same days.

Hi all,
Our family bought 55 acres in Roane County last year. We'll be moving there soon, but are there at least twice a month if not more. We have neighbors that keep an eye on the place for us, and have already chased away some suspicious looking people. I love it there and can't wait to move down full time and be able to begin our new homesteading life!

Hey yall!
Ive been readin this and other forums (alot) and found alot of answers but still have some w.v specefic questions
my basic plans are a large acreage hunting/recreation property that i will work on to make a retirement/homestead. I have to be in fairfax va m-f and then plan on driving out fri night and staying till sunday/monday morning. So near term a small cabin, outhouse etc and longer term would like to do some livestock
So the questions i still have
1. I will have ~50k down and am planning on a 150k property with a high 700s credit score will i be able to finance the remaining 100? Probable 10year
2. Would like to make this property my legal residence (will be sublettinf/moving alot in fairfax). What is required to establish residency on a undeveloped lot. Will the cabin be enough?
3. Building code (if any) for cabin outhouse, rainwater collection etc
Thats a good start! Thanks

We've been doing this for 7 years. We live at Harpers Ferry but farm in Grant Co, which is 2 hours away. We go to the farm once a week. That's were our cattle are. The farm is totally fenced in behind locked gates.
For a cabin, we had a mini barn built 12'x 88' We use an out house but we are putting a bathroom in the cabin. Lack of time and now money has kept us from finishing that right now
There is no building code but we had to get the electric inspected. Jeremy from Allegheny Power came out and did that.
I think you just need a mailbox but we have one and still haven't established it as our legal residence. You will need to switch your drivers license from VA to WV and use the WV land for your mail. Someone else may correct me but I believe that is all.
Code is county by county. You can't do in Jefferson Co (Harpers Ferry) what you can do in Grant Co.

Not yet, but I want to. We keep kefir grains in milk and they will make curds. I have seen reference to making cheese from kefir. Melissa has an easy to follow "how to" on her blog on cheese from milk......
I just looked for her blog and only see facebook on her signature line. I'll PM her.

No .... we would like to get goats duck and chicken. Getting cows would require a major time investment. I plan to ready my limited hay fields and have it hayed on shares.
We live with solar electricity, water pumped from a frost free hydrant by genny, and then collected in a 425 gallon above ground storage tank. We gravity feed that for most needs and store 40 gallons specifically for kitchen needs nearly each time we pump. This is time consuming, and we have only grown veggies and 8 fruit trees so far.
Talk to you soon.

Just wanted to jump in here and say hi. We'll be moving to Doddridge county, between West Union and Jane Lew if looking at a map, later this month. My husband works in Jane Lew.
We will be starting from scratch since we sold all of our animals last year in order for my husband to take a short notice job transfer. We plan on having a milk goat, dairy cows (Dexter or Jersey), chickens, ducks (we have water), turkeys and pigs along with a garden and orchard. We should have enough space to pasture all of our animals and still store quite a bit away for winter. I would love to keep bees. But for right now, we will be trying to turn the hunting cabin into a liveable house for our family before winter gets here.
We did meet up with our future neighbors and they are totally off-grid
FWIW, the I-79 corridor between Weston and Morgantown is getting awfully expensive, with the Marcellus Shale boom lots of people are moving in. The campgrounds are full with people living in campers/trailers while working the rigs. There are new make-shift campgrounds going in as well. But if you need a job there are also lots of professional jobs available as well as the gas drilling jobs. The Parkersburg/Charleston/ I-77 area seems to have the best prices. Check out Ritchie Realty for lots of land listings in that area.
Hope we get a chance to meet up with ya'll!

Sam, are you still going to the Hamfest? I'm coming, even tho I know nuttin' about Ham radio except the movie guys always yell CQ, CQ into the mike..... *grin* Google says it will take 2-3 hours depending on which way I go, so I'm signing off for bed so I can hit the road at 0:dark 30! Somebody bring a camera, DD "borrowed" mine and it never came back!

I made it to the hamfest around 12. I spent about 20 minutes walking around looking for anyone that wasn't a ham. No luck. Went back to my class down the road.

There was 3 of us there counting my wife. We were sitting under the pav where the anouncers were. I am the old guy with a white beard with an o2 tank and had on a pink shirt and name tag on my hat. We were there from about 8:30 till after 1. Sorry we missed you. Maybe if we can get everyone to meet again it would be easier. Sam

I had a major leak in my roof to repair. We are glad we repaired it as it rained really hard last night.
I wanted to meet everyone especially Tamsam as we live close to each other.
It is so hard to plan things.
Lets try again.
Best regards,
Dave

Darren, sorry we missed you! I shoulda had a big ole sign, I guess. I found Tammy and Sam pretty easily.... But the O2 tank was little and not obvious. I think the Herb Association meeting on Oct 9th has been mentioned as another meetup. It's also at Jackson's Mill. I wouldn't mind another road trip! I might even get the herb people to teach me how to keep a rosemary plant alive through the winter!

We had a very nice visit. Just wish we lived a lot closer but next trip to Princeton we will have to say howdy to each other again. We do need to plan another "Lets say hello get together" so we can put a face with names. Have a great day all, Sam
