Guess I'll chime in here. I don't really homestead, just the garden and my dogs. I'm in Grant County outside of Petersburg.

Not there yet, but am busy learning as much as possible, and doing what I can with what is available.

Maysville? Rt 42? We might be neighbors. Dh and older son are making hay today. It's so dry that they cut this morning and are baling tonight when they get a little moisture

We have a small farm in Roane Co. but have moved a couple into it as caretakers. My dads in congestive heart failure so we are in our "regular" house where we can help take care of him. Don't know when we will get back to the farm but we sure miss it!

Dorcas, so we are not too far away from each other. I worked on a chicken farm on Knobley Rd, years ago, very pretty part of the county.

Not in WV, but we're right up the road. Mom was from Ohio County WV & still have family there. Good to see so many homesteaders nearby!

Kanawha County here. We currently raise three breeds of chickens and a large garden for canning.... Looking possibly to sell this place and find some land in Roane County. Also looking to get started in Dexter Cattle (anyone selling any stock at a reasonable price?)

It would be interesting to have a get together at a central location. Everybody bring a tent and spend a week-end sharing ideas and getting to know some of our neighbors...

We've been thinking about relocating back East. My people are from WV and I was born just across the river in MD (where the hospital for the area is). I miss it fair bit sometimes.

Anyone out there want to recommend their area as a good & affordable place to homestead?

What's land going for per acre in yer neck o' the woods?

What's permitting / zoning like?

Good water?

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

Be well!

How do we start the planning process... I can help plan, we just need a central location... Anyone live near Flatwoods/Sutton... That's about the middle of the state I think.

Do you have any ideas where a bunch or a few of us might be able to get together one week-end and set up some camps. I think it would be wonderful to sit and share experiences, trade ideas and help each other gain some knowledge... A network of Mountaineers can never be a bad thing.

Hillrunner, This is the WV site for selling at farmers markets. Also has links to the rest of WVU Extension program. You should be able to find the info you need on selling meat. http://smallfarmcenter.ext.wvu.edu/farmers_markets

Most places are already booked for the summer. Just meeting for a picnic for a few hours may work. Some place with shade.open to the public would work.

I can check on the 4-H camp in Gilmer County. They have a small pavilion that might work. The grounds of the Lunatic Asylum in Weston might work too.
