VegRN - Come and get all you want. I'd offer to catch them and put them in an envelope to mail 'em but Don't think Mr. Postman would like that idea

I walk around with a kaiser blade. Why waste good ammo when you can just chop 'em in half?

Because to chop their head off I would have to be a lot closer than I intend to be. We have copperhead, cottonmouth and rattlesnake but seldom see anything. To me, a cottonmouth is the most evil snake there is.

Venon differs between snakes. As I recall, the venon from a cottonmouth is particularly bad since it basically eats away at flesh.
When I first moved to TN I had snake fobia. I've since learned to live with them.

I was told by people in this area we did not have "cottonmouth" snakes; but I saw what the one who killed it called a "water moccasin". Aren't they the same thing?

Yes, cottonmouths and water moccasins are the same snake.

When I worked as a mail carrier in AL I had a pet store on my route. I delivered snakes several times. Worst part was the pet store was near the end of my route so I would have to spend the whole day in the car listening to the snake sliding around in it's box behind me.

"caution: live snake. do not open." hahahahha!!!!!!
oh man. hahahaha.
my son got bitten by a copperhead about a foot long when he was 7. bit him on the ring finger of his right hand. arm swelled up to his bicep, we spent the night in the hospital. they flooded his system with iv fluid and that was it. no ill effects other than the swelling which was gone in a couple days. he's still not scared of snakes. we dispatch all poisonous snakes around here quickly.

Not sure the validity but I've heard rumors around here that in mating season black snakes will mate with anything, including copper heads. A black snake that smells like cucumbers is a supposed a mix of copper head and potentially venomous.

We had those rumors here. Too different genetically for that to happen. Makes a nice scare story though.

i live next to a state forest and have some wild and wooded land of my own. lots of it is rocky and some of it has springs and there is a creek that runs through right next to the house. my sister lives about 200 yards away and has been having issues with copperheads for several years now. rumor has it that her house is right next to a spot where copperheads have always been. another spot of high activity is at my other sister's house about 200 yards in another direction. she lives right next to the main creek as well and she and her neighbors kill a few every year. i have weeds and brambles galore and i have only ever encountered a handful in my life here at my house. there was one that chased me while i was push mowing the front yard and two that were caught in minnow traps. i thought those two were water snakes, but the eyes of the snakes told me different.i didn't think they would swim, but it seems lots of beliefs about snakes are wrong. i once played with a baby copperhead one warm day in november near sister number one's house before i realized it was a copperhead. considering the amount of time i spent running barefoot through the fields here, i consider myself lucky.
one thing i do have that my sister's don't is an abundance of black snakes. they live in my attic in the winter. the attic is full of shed skins. when i was young, dad had ducks, geese and guinea fowl. he always said the ducks and geese would eat the baby copperheads. i think he was right.
i think that copperheads are probably like rattlesnakes and rely on the same territory year after year. i think it would be a good idea to try to put that in balance with a few natural predators. maybe a few fowl of your own would be a good idea. i will continue to live peacefully with the black snakes...except for that one who invaded my living room and then kept poking it's head out of a hole in my door frame. i had to dispatch that one.

I think you are right. I am looking into getting some guineas and maybe peacocks. Before we bought the land last year, we boarded the horses at a place that backed up to a creek and wooded land...prime snake country. He had a bunch of peacocks, and in almost 10 years of being there we never saw a single snake. He also had lots of barn cats. I have the two kittens now, but I am thinking about adopting a few more.
Right now, I have been neglecting my garden because I am scared there will be snakes in it I do not want to live in fear in my own home. I need to glove up, boot up, and just do it. I guarantee until I get the gun thing figured out my trusty shovel will not be far from my side.

MELOC, your situation would frighten the life out of me!
My son constantly brings in the wild animals he finds, playing with them for awhile and then releasing them. This includes huge black snakes. Give me a sec and I will post a picture here of that one.
I tolerate this because I know the advantage of having black snakes around; but I sure would not tolerate living with them crawling out of my attic.

Living in PA, about the only snake we have to worry about is a rattler.
Where we live now, was my wife's Great Aunt's property. She was always having trouble with black snakes - all around the property and even in the cellar as she kept the cellar warm.
Once we moved in, and we have free range chickens, we don't see ANY snakes anymore. I believe that with the Great Aunt, she wasn't active or had any animals around, so the snakes had nothing to fear. Now, with chickens and guineas on free range, I believe they all slithered away to get away from the constant "activity".
