That is right in line with what I was going to suggest. Stick to taking them for free, and then after the whole deal is signed, sealed and delivered, THEN give her what ever amount of money you feel is fair.

But I agree 100% with whoever said to get something in writing. If the police come knocking at your door because Ms Crackhead took the neighbor's animals, you will still be out the cash, but have proof that she gave / sold them to you.

Good luck,

why did she keep changing the place, and time? I also think that there are too many red flags. My guess is she will never show up. ( if you are lucky)

the story of not knowing what a sale barn is seems to be a stretch to me, then the unemployed thing, the only thing she left out was her sick granny. Wait for it ......

paranoid and highly suspicious. seriously.

That bit about selling the hens and rabbits to keep her phone on set off some bells. If she's so desperate to keep her phone on, she would have tried a little harder to meet up with you before. Of course, I thought she needed to get rid of them because she was moving.

She is either used to manipulating people or she is up to something. If you take the hens, quarantine them from your own chickens, if you have chickens.

Good point AR Transplant, I can't imagine anyone not knowing what a sales barn is, especially someone that has more of a farm type animal. Lots of people may not know WHERE to find a sales barn, but most people know that they exist.

Not true. For example, around here you would get met with blank stares if you said "sales barn". It's not a term used. Some of the good ole boys might finally ask if you mean "livestock auction", which is what it's called around here.

And, lots of folk want nothing to do with them. They've got a reputation of brutality, and many people don't want their critters to go through it.

Whole lot of folk buy critters from a feed store or pet store, and have no knowledge of the wholesale markets like auction houses or sales barns.

Did she show up?

And is the Sale Barn / Livestock Auction like the "Coke, Soda, or Pop" thing with people from different part of the country?

FYI, (like anyone needs to know)I was raised in IL, so I say Livestock Auction and Pop (say Coke in a restaurant just to be clearer)

She did show up and on time. 10 rabbits (2 adults) in all but only 4 hens. All appear to be in good health. I got the critters and we each went our own way.

There are at least 3 sale barns within an hour drive of here. Anyone with serious livestock knows about them. One sells everything and I do mean everything! The other two are 95% cattle and hogs with just a few sheep and goats.
