Even military went to automatics. I believe drivers ed is one cause. All kids anymore are trained on an automatic at school and nobody is going to undertake the horrible task of teaching them how to drive a manual. I taught my ex to drive stick and never again would I go through something like that. Pay somebody else to do it and its money well spent. I will say for complete newbie, installing an easy to read tachometer helps a lot. Some newbies just cant tell by sound of the engine that they need to shift. To them usually a car is just an enclosed "magic carpet" and even terms like "engine" and "transmission" are meaningless.

His is a four wheel drive, so the gas mileage is about 18-20 mpg or so, not great, but not horrible.
Ditto, its not as overly big as the crew cabs, yet that extra inside is very nice to have.Sure its a little harder to move around in small places, but it isnt unreasonable either.I think, and wife insists,a ext cab is the way to go.

Was also nice when we were hauling Bud and wife and Farm dog around,in the rain, boy was she all over his case about their single cab.

Got a wife or family then ext cab really is a nice thing.

The giant Ford 4x4 with crew cab, forget it,cant move the thing its so long and for whatever reason isnt a very good snow truck, neighbor has one and its embarrassing watching him just trying to get up his driveway, not sure the problem but traction is just not much. We Dodge and Chevy guys here dont have a problem.

.............I've never owned a pickup that didn't have an 8 foot bed ! And , I'd never buy a single cab truck either because I just carry too much "Stuff" with me . And , as far as trailers are concerned , the Longer the wheel base the more control a body has when towing , period . I could have purchased a 6.0 in a dually , but I need the 8.1 so I know I made the correct decision . , fordy

I own an 8 cyl diesel 2500 Silverado reg cab.
It is a problem loading items but you will load mostly kids and you can pass grocery and gear to them. You would probably prefer the 8 cyl tho.

I open the tailgate and stack plywood then 2 by's and ratchet strap my load around the taigate to the holes in the trailer hitch. Only load that dropped was due to rusted tailgate straps snapping. Replacements were stainless steel.

I like my short bed because I haul a lot of sawdust and mulch ... I can rake it out of the 6 ft. bed without having to climb up in the truck.

When I have to haul lumber, etc., that sticks out the back, I just red-flag it!

Thank you, everyone.

We found an '06 silverado with 34,000 miles on it for a really good price we couldn't turn down. The bigger 8 cyl., 6.5' bed, extended cab, tow package, bed liner. We hope all works out well (as far as reliability).

Sounds good, while all makes/models have their problems, I think you will be pleased with this truck.

This is a good high traffic site for reference on maintenance or repair items. There is a general section for full-sized trucks and a section where you can post your question for a GM tech to answer.
