i don't have any domestic animals except 2 cats, and the flies are so bad outside if you sit down for a minute you have dozens landing on you..it is horrible. Generally I enjoy sitting down outside, but not if i'm covered in flies !

I heard yesterday from two sources (one was a orchard inspector ) that the DNRE released millions of >"friendly flies"<.
When these things lay eggs the larva eat the tent caterpillar worms.
And we are having another monster infestation of thoses tent cat's.

I have taken those cats out of my apple and plum trees. . .nasty.

If this is a viable way to deal with the tent caterpillars then I'll put up with the flies . . . . . . . .nasty......

Some one giggle Mich. DNRE and see what they say............

I ought to take pictures of my back porch with the bags of water and pennies. The flies won't land on the bags themselves but they show no fear in landing or flying anywhere near them. I've tried it with empty soda bottles too. I don't think it even reduces the number of them.

We're in the middle of a few home improvement projects and we had to string a temporary fly strip in the middle of the living room because so many flies came in with the doors opening and closing.

Unfortunately this is about the normal number of flies for us. We have poultry and they don't seem to make a difference in the fly population. A creek runs along our house and seems to encourage all kinds of annoying insects from flies to gnats to mosquitoes.

We are about 5 miles from "town", and they are having an awful time with those tent cats. You can't sit outside without them dropping from the trees or crawling up your legs. They are coating houses and roads. Many of the trees have been defoliated to the point that they look like trees in the winter. We don't have them here....yet...could be because of the free ranging chickens or ? Fly population seems about normal for this time of the year. Regarding the DNRE bringing in "attack flies", weren't the Asian beetles introduced to take care of another pest problem? Sure hope the DNRE has given enough thought to another insect introduction...usually they don't!

I don't know why this works for some and not others, but like tamsam I have 2 plastic bags with a penny in them hanging at the barn and 1 by the back door, and for the second year in a row they're working beautifully.

I have one by our side door that seemed to be attracting tons of flys and by-golly it works!

I'm glad other people are thinking the same thing, yes, the flies, and just about everything else is bad lately. I think it's going to be a bad flee season down here in FL, at least that's how it's looking for far.

We must live in Eden because we have only a hand full of black flies occasionally, ticks also are only occasional visitors and there are no mosquitos or horse flies! I think the reason is because we are right next to the ocean. The aforementioned don't like the salt air and high winds we often have.

Less then a quarter mile down the road flies, mosquitos and ticks flourish. Our wood lot is five miles away and has plenty of bugs! We cut fire wood late fall and early winter and have it all home early Spring. We don't go near the woods in bug season. Our pastures are also kept up and eaten off and the grass around the house and barn is kept mowed which discourages ticks.

The down side of living near the ocean is it never gets really warm except the odd summer days. There is summer fog which makes haying difficult and we have a lot of wind.Presently it stays in the 50's F or 13-15 C. It is hard growing warm weather crops such as peppers and tomatoes outdoors so we have to have a hot house . But I think I will stay here away from the bugs.
