Haha! Good story. We are "back in the woods" too with husband gone working. Once when we were first out here, the children heard the regular Wild Turkey noises, which we had learned to identify. The boys were in bed in a back room and I was in kitchen and I heard my youngest whisper out "Mom! Mr. Pace is outside the window!"
Mr. Pace was a very colorful "Local" ole-timer who had run-ins with the police, spent time in both jails and mental hospitals, cussed a lot, drank and in general provided many great stories. He lived down our gravel road and we knew he walked the woods.
I went to see what was up and I heard the turkey yelp again and just after the turkey noise I heard a man's voice say "$%%^&%%^$$$%" to the turkey! No doubt, it was Mr. Pace outside peering in the back window!
I yelled out to him to "GIT!" and after that we hung up curtains. We also started to target shoot more so he would hear and stay off. He continued to wander around for years and we do miss him (bless his heart).

I'm betting you heard a screech owl. They do indeed sound like someone being murdered when they let loose. They will do this for upwards of an hour at times. I usually sleep through it till my wife wakes me up. I don't freak at stuff like that, cause I know it's just part of the miracle of nature, but about 30 years ago, I was on a night hike with a friend, and we both (without saying so before hand) had an eerie feeling that some force was watching us, as we walked, and it was uncomfortable. At the completion of the walk, one of us mentioned the feeling we had, and the other said they felt the exact same way, but didn't want to say anything. I can't recall which of us said so first. This is from folks who have spent many, many hours hiking day and night with no previous experience such as this.

A couple of days ago I went for a run in the dark (no, I dont have a death wish, but I do have a schedule and I was busy earlier!) and a deer popped out right in front of me and ran across the road! Scared me half to death.

This was something I firmly wanted to conquer as a girl. I worked at a huge girl scout camp and let my batteries die on my flashlight and started walking the trails at night, alone.
I am now pretty good. Run into deer, owls, and the like. Out by us, people don't usually come onto others land unless they call first. Hopefully it'll stay that way.
It can be conquered, but it took me quite a while.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread!
I too have freaked myself out. We have/had a favorite camping spot up in the Willamette forest (since the freak out we only go there on day trips now...~lol~...), one night I had to crawl of of our tent and run to our potable loo, I didn't make it that far, I got a horrible feeling that I need to get back into the 'safety' of the tent (~lol~), but jeez I had to go so I kept trying to move beyond the light of the lantern hanging in a tree but I kept getting that horrible feeling that I wasn't alone, so I squated next to the truck, then dashed back to the tent and then laid awake the rest of the night freaked out by every little noise.
The next day we drove some old logging roads hunting wild Blueberries and saw a Mountain lion run across the road in front of us.
Was it a Mountain lion that freaked me out or was it my imagination in overdrive?

Owls can make a sound like a woman being murdered or a metro sexual man getting his man bag snatched.
(they don't make a smile for that one)

I got freaked out once, many years ago. Spent the night at a freind's house way out in the sticks. Woke up to what I swore was someone walking past the open bedroom windows. Then saw a dark shadow, heard this heavy breathing. Then a loud SNORT! My heart was thudding in my chest, I saw eyes!!! Big, HUGE eyes...
Wait, they were big, brown eyes. Kind of like...horse eyes. And a big snuffling nose pressed right up against the window screen.
Neighbor's horse that was pastured on her property was looking in the window.

Last month I had just finished watching a show about Aliens and had to go out to the garage which is all the way across our yard. It was dark out with no moon. I got halfway across the yard when I heard a weird chattering sound.. my imagination took over and it started to sound like some language that I would imagine an Alien would make. I made it to the garage and back in record time. It turned out to be our power lines making noise.
