Since you do not post your area one can only speculate. Maybe you could hear it again and get to the bottom of it. My vote is for BIG FOOT.

I was guessing if it might be a bear, but was hoping that you might find prints. I'm no expert at either bears or deer, but I agree that both could make odd breathing sounds.

Huffing and clacking. Scroll down to apprehensive expressions. This bear is huffing and clacking. If you take out the clacking (banging teeth together), is this the sound you heard?

I vote for a deer. I had a deer "blow" at me one night right outside my bedroom window. It sounded like something was sharply exhaling and almosted sound echoe-y. You'd have to hear it to know what I'm talking about. When I heard that I hit the floor and hollered for my husband and imitated the noise for him. He laughed at me and explained to me that deer will "blow" at you to see what you are or if you are going to move.

You're welcome!

Bears are moving here. They're in search of food and very soon they'll be searching for mates. There was a large boar near a friend's stand yesterday while he was turkey hunting with a kid. The boy got a 15 lb jake and an up close look at the bear. It was a good day!

I was hiking some property in Gallia County down there and the same thing happened to me. Scared the tar out of me! I told a local resident/friend about it and he just laughed. He said it was a deer. It's happened a few times since, and since I'm not afraid of it any more, I checked to see what was making that blowing noise and it's always been deer in the immediate area.

Could very likely have been a bird. We have some that hang out in the brushy areas. I will eventually find out what kind it is; so far no luck. But it makes an odd breathing noise that sounds a lot like something HUGE, especially in the deep, dark woods.

Country wife, are you sure it's a bird, and not a bear hunkered down in the brush, LOL!
