i just went around a Sprayed the bejeepers out of them yesterday. THAT is the way to take care of those WEEDS. A Weed is anything you do not want whether it is a flower or not in my book.

The rabbits go crazy over the dandelion flowers. I move their little rabbit tractor over a fresh patch everyday. Saves beacoup bucks on rabbit feed as they will eat & eat the flowers until their bellies are ready to bust. Obviously not a solution to getting rid of them (the weeds not the rabbits) but a useful alternative. Nice part is there are so many that I'll have enough to make wine, frocia or salads!

On a more serious note (actually, I was serious) you could do me a great favor by collecting the seeds and mailing them to me. That will be light weight. We lack dandelions. They are great animal food and I would love to have them in our pastures. I've got about 70 acres I would like to seed with them...

If you're serious, I'll definitely help you out. I'll send you a PM soon.

I was just up in New Hampshire (just got back yesterday as a matter of fact), and I think your problems is that it's too darn cold for dandelions! Yesterday morning, when I got up to head to the Airport, I had to scrape a good 10 inches of snow off my car.

Let your lawn grow to about 8" tall, mow. Let the lawn grow up to 8" again, mow. I doubt that you'll see many after that. I certainly didn't.

Hey Highlands, if I sent you a package to the West Topsham address would that get to you. I have a TON of dandy's in my yard and I would pull some puff balls off and put them in a small box for you.
Just let me know if that address is still good.

Chickens love dandelions and will keep all weeds out of the yard.

I was going to suggest a herd of rabbits.

An excellent was to get rid of dandelions is to spread lime or wood ashes in your yard. I did that about 10 years ago and still have no dandelions in the treated parts of the yard.

OP, when you find a way to rid your place of dandelions let me know. I've never seen them as thick as they are here. DH mowed yesterday. Today the stupid little puff balls spread more seed.

There is no way in the world that my family would eat them. Don't drink. Our attitude is this: KILL THEM. Of course, if anyone wants a great source for their greens, wine, and "coffee" please let me know and I'll provide directions to our little farm.

I love their bright flowers. You know that spring is well on its way when you see them.

When I have to weed them out of the flower beds, I give them to my chickens and my horses.

I was wondering about the jelly as I have a lot of them. What does it taste like? Is it for toast or more like a pepper jelly? I think I would like to try to make some.

This weekend, I'm going to have my daughter run around the yard and collect the dandelion flowers in a box. I'll send them to you next week.

I absolutely love them- was very sad not to have any when I got here. Now 4 years later with plenty of encouragement (had kids bring home seed heads from a friend's lawn) finally getting some.

If you dont wan't to do something useful with them, mow them before they go to seed (the white puffballs). You will have to mow them alot. Or just pick them. I remember when I was a kid my parents would give me 2 pennies for each dandelion I would pick in the lawn. I could make $5 or $6 in a day!! and my parents were happy.
Thanks...

I've always thought dandelions were pretty flowers. I like to see them.

Where I grew up though, the retired neighbor man would spend each day with a plastic bucket picking the flowers and then dump them in the woods. He didn't pick the whole plant, just the flowers, so the very next day another flower would be popping up where he just picked. He would spend all day, EVERY day doing this.

But to tell you the truth, I think it was to get out of the house and away from his wife - seriously!

If you want to kill them Ortho's Weed and Feed does a pretty good job for me, The generic brand didn't do as well, so I spend the extra couple $ a bottle for Ortho.

Yes I will agree with that. I am not sure what my land lord had in his sprayer, but he went over his alfalfa field as he does NOT want dandelions in that so he sprayed wed killer. No matter what the bees think. He also has bee hives but that does not stop him from spraying his alfalfa nor my lawn as well as his lawn~!!
