I used to hunt wild hogs with dogs. It's the best way to track down the wily smart boars who are super aggressive. Their meat tastes good usually but if it's an very old boar or one that has been eating nasty foods then the meat can be funky tasting.I plan to go back into hog hunting as soon as I can. Hogs can fight back and have an escape route compared with deer. I only hunt deer via stands because it is more challenging. i think deer hunting with dogs is done for people who don't want to work in hunting them. Is it bad? Depends on your view and how you grew up doing it.

I've hunted very few times. It was ok, just not my preference. I feel sadness about shooting most animals, but acknowledge it and move on. There are so many deer in central TX, there i sno need for any help in finding them.

So are you saying hunting hogs with dogs involves "no work" too?
I think sitting in a stand is less "work" than anything involving handling a pack of dogs.

Most places that allow dog hunting also happen to be Southern coastal states with DENSE woods and swamps that aren't very conducive to any other hunting methods.

The same things apply to deer. Dogs very seldom catch a deer and most of the time they never even get close enough to see it unless someone kills it.

Putting a pack of dogs in even a small block of woods is no guarantee that you'll even SEE a deer come out. The dogs only purpose is simply to get the deer moving around.

My hog dogs have caught deer in Texas by accident because the deer was running with the hogs so yes, it can happen. Texas has different land terrain so it's different for each state. Also hounds are trained to just bawl on track while hog dogs tend to be cur dogs that are silent and trained to bite and contain the animal they are tracking as a general rule.

As for deer hunting with dogs in Texas, it's been banned for a while due to several reasons. Hunters would release the hounds then drive around to the other side and sit in the back of their trucks waiting for the deer to run into line of sight then shoot them. What's sporting about that? Turns out lots of the hunters would dump the dogs out in the country to starve to death or be shot for harassing livestock after the end of the deer hunting season then they would buy pups and start it all over again. What a waste of dogs. Not everyone did that but lots did. Also I suspect property trepassing issues came into play.

Ted Nugent says you honor the deer by dropping it instant dead from nowhere I mean the deer doesn't know what hit him.
