You won't have any splatter if you use a good upper grade paint and a $5 roller cover.

Like I've said for years, you either pay for good paint and tools, or you pay for it in clean up time.

I've always used WalMart paint, with excellent results.

If you want to spend more money, I'd go with Sherwin Williams. Their colors are fabulous! You can go with many different "sheens", other than the basic 3. But for the best value, I'd still go with the WalMart paint.

I paint all the time and use the Valspar paint from Lowes. The things to take into consideration are the rooms you are painting. Use a semi gloss for wet areas like a kitchen and bath and for your trim and doors if you paint them. Satin for the main living areas and hallways. If you need to save a little bit of money use a low sheen in the bedrooms like an eggshell. You can't wash eggshell as hard as the others so don't use it in a kids bedroom. If you can reprime the walls. Use a grey primer for dark colors or hard to get colors, like yellows and reds. But most of all don't use cheap brushes or rollers. They will fall apart in you paint and spread cheap brush or roller all over your walls. The reason I started using the Valspar paint is because Lowes switched to a no VOC tint and the paint base itself has more solids to it and more mold preventive to it then most paints on the market. They have always taken care of me there and stand behind their paint.

I prefer Dutch Boy for outside....with Behr as a second choice. Dutch Boy paint held up for 4 yrs here on everything...the walmart paint did not cover well and flaked before the summer was even over. Behr was better- it lasted about 3 yrs, but needed a second coat. Inside- Dutch Boy was good...Kilz was good - both had great coverage. I don't care so much about "lasting long" inside as we paint every few years anyways because hubby and I are smokers. The walmart paint would come off when I cleaned walls. This time I am going with Sherwinn-Williams because of thier color choices, quality (one coat coverage) and because I can actually choose the colors online with thier little program- upload a pic of your room and paint with the color of your choice. I also found someone on CL who can get it for me for $5 a gallon, but takes a little while for colors.

My husband has been painting for 20+ years. He prefers Sherwin Williams paint. If you are looking to cut the cost and you are not set on a certain color you can sometimes get miss-tints at a discounted price.
