I went poking around the house plans on that site and came up with several that I like. I am happy with a small house -- right now there are three of us (DD, myself, and my grandmother) living in under 1400 s.f., and Grandma has her own bath, the large master bedroom, a walk-in closet, and a sitting room which is larger than the shared living room, so that's at least a third of the square footage. But with DD, I do need two bedrooms (we can share a bedroom, but it's better to have some privacy). And with growing much of our food, considerable pantry space is a must. I have my other Grandmother's old treadle sewing machine -- and use it -- so need space for that and for sewing stuff. Have to have a desk, partly for my own projects and partly for work. We need a handicapped-accessible bathroom, mostly because DD needs help in there at times so two adults need to be able to fit. Need a wood stove for heat and cooking, and a place at the entry for coats and muddy boots.
It is possible to get all that into a very small space, even allowing for two people to get around one another, but it takes a GREAT deal of thought and planning!
