You better give this further thought. I suggest you get some help....not a gun.
Peace and love.
Protect themselves and their property perhaps??

If you can type, you can pull a trigger.

It's not really hard at all.

It'd probably be best if I didn't say what I'd do to someone if they killed one of my dogs.

Please don't let me catch someone in the act... Texas Castle Laws are very very lenient. I hold a stranger's life to be off less than zero value, if they intend to cause me or mine harm.

Most local folks are mighty protective of their dogs... maybe even more so than their own kids. I had a cousin who caught a guy stealing one of his dogs...........he chased him down, ran him off the road, and they discussed some Shakespearen tragedies for a while...

Thanks, many thanks, to the good-hearted helpful people who gave specific advice and suggestions here, based on which I have now bought TWO small handguns.
First, I bought a Daisy pistol that uses co2 cartridges for croaking my critters. It would probably work fine for scaring people, too since it looks like a handgun if you are like me and don't know any better!
The other gun I bought is just the cutest little .22. One of the men who (with my permission) hunts on my land found it for me in a pawn shop. It is a Jennings J-22. AFTER I bought it, I looked it up on the internet and thus discovered some gun forums (fora?). Some of those posters are hilarious! One was a guy named Beeman who uses the J-22 to shoot rattlesnakes that crawl under his hives. He must have very dociles bees if they put up with the percussion racket! I wonder if that's the same Beeman whose posts I've seen on this forum?
Anyway, I learned this is a fastidious little gun which only likes cci mini mags so I bought some of its preferred ammo. It is a little gun which fits my hand well. I was able to cock it at the pawn shop. I was very attracted to the Ruger LCR which one person recommended but they are expensive so I'll just keep that idea in mind in case ny new little saturday night special blows up when I try to fire it!
Thanks again to the helpful persons here!

Actually I was surprised at how heavy of trigger pull on my little SW hammerless .38 had. Can you lighten those triggers? I haven't tried yet. Of course it will never be featherlight but it would be nice to lighten some.

But yea a Mossberg 12 ga or even a 410 is the perfect home defense weapon.

Different firearms have different levels of adjustability... Pretty much EVERY firearm you purchase nowadays is going to have "lawyer" pull. Gunmakers trying to CYA by having hard trigger pulls, as if this is somehow safer.

On my last hunting rifle, I really really liked the look, feel, and handling of a Ruger rifle... till I found out the trigger wasn't adjustable. I went with a Winchester Model 70, as soon as I got it home, I took it apart, adjusted the trigger to just right... probably 1/4 the pull of what it came from from the factory.

OP... I know it's a moral issue, having to defend one's self. Scaring people can and will get you into trouble, depending on your jurisdiction. I've been 'told' that 'wounding' someone would get me into more trouble (possibility of civil as well as criminal suits) than just eliminating the problem completely. None of us want to ever have to cause harm to any other human being.

I have got myself out of sticky situations, by the mere presence of a very large barreled firearm. Bad people usually will back down in the presence of self protection, and a look in your eyes that says you really will use it....

Good luck... and a prayer that you can find some acreage away from the evil spawn that lives nearby.

A word about J-22's: I sold several of those over the years before I let my license go. They are ammunition sensitive and the manufacturer is very upfront about that requirement!

They need a 22 round that has enough oomph to cycle the slide reliably. I suggest CCI stingers.

Some one poisoned a dog that was fenced in or on a run/lead?
I hope you called the police.
Or was the dog running loose?

Get another dog. The humane societies are full of good used dogs that would love a home.

Some signs that say "I love to shoot my guns" may help also.

I like the junior models of shotguns. They are shorter yet still use big person ammo. I like the 20ga but if its too much then shoot a 410 and try it out.
Defiantly trial shoot a gun before you choose.

And if you have a home invader- yell "you've got 5 seconds to get out and 3 are gone" (this gives an Innocent person a chance to speak up). If they are still in the house, shoot out a window. Don't wait to see them so you can shoot them (that can ruin your life) the object is to get them out,, not to shoot someone they will all of a sudden be the best person in the county with lots of hopes and possibilities for the future (at least thats what their lawyer will say in court and it can take big $ to get your freedom back sometimes.

Motion activated lights are a big help also. Night time Intruders don't like light.

I wish you all the luck.

So you suggest giving away your location, escalating the situation with gunfire, temporarily unloading your weapon (until you pump or cock or whatever), risking a jam, and also leaving yourself one less round of available ammo. If they have already invaded, they have already decided on their life path.
