The Beast

A few weeks ago one of my best customers, Phil, had his "golden birthday" party at the bar my restaurant is in. His party brought a lot of business in and as thanks for that, and the fact that he is a great customer I fixed him something special. Phil is a carpenter, and a dang hard worker. He worked straight through the winter in some awful weather. A man like that has a tremendous appetite. I took 2 1/3 burger patties, stuck 2 slices of cheese between them, pinched them together, and fried it up. On top of this I piled garlic sauteed mushrooms, several slices of bacon, and a pile of pulled pork.

He loved it.

Yesterday he came in and ordered a "Phil-burger." Now this item isn't on the menu, but I fixed him one anyway (channel Arlo Guthrie here) "you can get anything you want, at Big Al's Restaurant".

Made me think that maybe I SHOULD have it on the menu.

Then I got to thinking about my digital scale. It weighs out in the decimel system, therefore 1/3 pound reads .333. Of course 2/3 pound reads .666.

I thought about naming it the "antichrist" but I could see how some folks might take offense at that, so I think I'm gonna call it "The Beast" and let the clever ones figure it out for themselves......

Well, you could call it (THE OBAMA BURGER)And tell the customers that asks,, you have the recipe hid behind lock and key and they ain't seeing it.:flame: lol

Phil + Beast = Pheast?

tamsam 03/15/10 12:19 AM

That is the way a little eatery here was. They would make anything you wanted if they could. When we work some of the bike rides and runs we try to get simple energy foods and the most popular is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and bananas.n Sam

Tinknal......do you own your restaurant? I have worked in the business for 27 years, and have always wanted to own a small, and home style place....I sure would love to chat with you about it!!
Thanks
Laura

Laura, I lease the kitchen from the local VFW post and serve food on premises.

Laura Zone 10 03/15/10 08:53 AM

Interesting.....
Have you ever thought of opening your own place, or is this arrangement a pretty hot set up?

Do you cater also? Or do you just serve lunch?

I would like to have my own place sometime in the future. I was only able to pull this off because the lease is so cheap. I serve from 10:00 AM to 9:00 pm. I do catering in house, they have a large banquet room. I've done one wedding so far and it looks like I'll be booking another one soon.

Hey Tink, have ya' ever seen "Man V Food" on the travel channel. The guy travels around and does nothing but eating chalenges at small resurants. You could be in the running for a visit.

That is so cool!!

Is it a 'family' thing, or you and some employees? Other than leasing, what are your operational expendatures? (sp) My daughter and I would love to start our own business, and I am so curious!! Thank you for your time.

The lease covers utilities so my only other expenses are food, advertising, and the odd utensil that neither they or I already own. Right now it's just my wife and myself.

You know- there are some mighty successful samywich shops in the large cities which have items named after customers. I would run with this idea in a heartbeat!! What better way to build up a local name and tradition! I'm sure you can figure out what to charge for each "special" the 1st time, then go from there. In the future, perhaps just feature the top 5, or 10, "special" samywichs. Make it a contest, a month or two at a time. JMHO & $.02

Beeman 03/16/10 09:05 AM

Signature meals are very popular especially with the Food Network and the Travel Channel featuring them. Maybe you should have some sort of eating contest for your Phil Burgers. Check out a sandwich truck called RU Hungry, it's at Rutgers University. If you can eat 5 of their signature sandwiches in 45 min they will name a signature sandwich after you that you design. The first one started out like yours and it grew from there.

Why not name a burger after a customer? A number of Restaurants do that. It's a "badge of pride" and you've gained a customer for life.

Sounds like the Juicy Lucy out of Minneapolis MN. They have two restaurants on the same road that serve similar burgers.
Cheese inside a burger with a side of fries and slaw or tater wedges and slaw. It was pretty darn good. They let you pick the cheese and my favorite is Bleu Cheese inside, with a little pepper jack on top.
And yes, I know why I am fat!

I like the idea. But if you get a couple of names on the menu will others try to pressure you into adding their special treat and name?
