I live on top of a hill with a great view.
BUT I STILL DONT WANT TO LIVE IN A HOLE.
In fact Id rather go the other way , a tree house or better yet a penthouse or tower top.
Why Deal with the problems of a in ground house when you can achive the same with a bit more insulation? Id build with Double wall constrction and insulate carefully ,I think it would be cheaper than in ground and much easier to modify

I have a couple bookmarked for us if we go that route
It's funny how many twists and turns you can take when following links on the net! I was looking at some of the owner built homes on this site and started to read about a 17 y/o girl who (with help) built one of the small houses on her and her mother's VT farm. Links from there led me to her mom's web pages. They no longer live on the farm as the mother has mult. health problems and is now in an apartment, still gardening (with her oxygen tank on!). The site is very interesting with many, many links that folks here might be interested in. You can also get to her VT farm web site. She sold produce on shares while living there.
Much of her current blogging is related to her illnesses, as it would be if your life changed so much because of disease processes, but the overall site has a lot of information. Seeing what she does with her garden, despite her illness makes me feel like a lazy so and so!

(I am also very sorry about the loss of your home. I hope your rebuilding goes quickly and the way you want it to).
