So that's what the Catskills look like in the winter! Oh, my... A good portion of the 14 inches that we got yesterday melted because our temps were in the 30's and we had sunshine yesterday afternoon. I hope that you get a thaw soon to take away some of the volume. (It sounds as though a flat roof just isn't feasible in your area.)

That is a lot of snow. Northern Michigan has missed all the major storms this winter. While we normally get 140 inches each season, I've only plowed my driveway once this whole winter.
The down side is that this area depends on snow. The snowmobiles bring lots or winter business to the motels and diners in the area. We did get enough ice on the Lake Huron Bay to host a big Pond Hockey Turnament last weekend. Funny to see a Zamboni grooming the ice out on the bay.

Nearly 20 years ago the area got 60 inches in 24 hours. It was in early December. Everyone took care of their property, helped neighbors and life went on. We did get help from the National Guard. They brought in trucks to haul the snow banks away. There wasn't room to pile the snow once the roofs, roads, driveways and sidewalks were shoveled.

The worst winter storm in the 30+ years I've been here was the second week of April. Nine inches of snow with 50 MPH winds created 10 feet drifts packed so hard you could walk on them without leaving a boot print!

That makes our record snowfall of 30 some inches for Feb look like chump change.

March is coming, it's just a couple days away, and after that spring will come soon.

Us too....

Well, I guess living in the mountains had to have a downside eventually. So far this year I have had something like 70" of snowfall. That, of course doesn't include the drifting. In front of the house there is no snow at all, and in the back the drifts are better than 6 feet deep. What a mess!

And thank God for cheap coal heat!

Steff, that's what we got in the central Adirondacks when I was growing up. We had records of snowfalls for years running over 18-20 feet per winter. Got 46" overnight once. That was a fun day.

Steff, yikes that is why I left Wyoming! It took a snow shovel to find it and I had to remember wherever I parked it, so I would know which lump was mine. When you get that much snow, how can you even get around out there to take care of your critters? How do you get to them? You look literally snowed in.

Next time it starts raining and DH does this I'll tell him to lighten up and get Lately, I've reminded him that we should be very grateful for any rain we are getting this year, as El Nino has caused an early Spring, and there is a much drier season predicted. I will not complain & hope for no forest fires.

That morning of "the big snow" (60 inches), my son had a wrestling meet 100 miles away and I was taking him an a few more wrestlers. I'd only gone a few miles and it got hard to see the road. My son got out and wiped the snow off the headlights as it was piling up. I didn't realize how deep the snow was and in the time it too to get into town, we gained another foot of snow. The school parking lt looked like it hadn't been plowed all winter. The side streets were closed and the plow trucks were trying to keep the main roads clear. My son wanted to stay at a friend's house, so I dropped him off and headed home. The country roads were real bad. I had 4 wheel drive and good tires, so figured I could go through it. I did, sort of. As I came down the last quarter mile to the house, the snow was so deep that as I drove into it, the part above my hood began to pile up on the hood until I couldn't see to drive. I had to stop 100 feet from my driveway, so I could clear the hood. But I couldn't open the door to get out. My wofe came out and shoveled a place next to the door so I could get out. I cleared the hood, backed up a bit and pile drived (pile drove?) into the driveway. And the snow kept coming.

But this screwy winter we haven't had much snow at all, way below normal.

I agree with this ! I left NY just for that reason. Hang in there Stef. I sure hate that the winter is that bad up there, but boy that snow sure is beautiful ! (of course I don't have to deal with it!)

Thats why I have a Jeep Wrangler, they are light enough to go "over" the snow, just make sure you don't stop in the deep stuff though.
