Get a mix. That is by source, size etc.

Those who study trees will tell you to plant in the native soil not in a pocket of manure/compost. In compost they will initially grow fast, but the roots will not spread out past the compost pocket. Long term- you want a tree with an excellent root system.
Topdressing with mulch or compost is however a good thing.

Spring Hill Nursery. "If for any reason, you aren't pleased with any plant upon receipt, after planting or once it grows, just contact Spring Hill anytime-no time limit- for as long as you garden." www.springhillnursery.com I started paying attention to guarantees after numerous issues with buying thru catalogs.

piccololily, I haven't bought from the Arbor Day Foundation except for the trees you get with your membership. The catalogue gives sizes and prices for many different trees so the size would depend on the type of tree you buy. I have heard they have a lot of complaints for sending out small "twigs" instead of 6 foot tall ready-made shade trees. But studies have shown the small trees adapt faster and soon outgrow the 6 foot ready made shade size trees. Prices are pretty good.
