Night conveniences
I want to make some sort of toilet arrangements for the "utility-free" guest house that we are putting together. Want it to be a bit nicer than just a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. Tried to search the WWW, but could not find anything.
Some sort of night bowl, or vase if you wish, so it will be comfortable to sit on and did not smell till morning...:D |
Look up composting toilet, there's all kinds of info, more than you'll ever need.

DW used a couple of my beehive boxes. If I remember correctly, she used one deep super and one shallow. The top was an inner cover, with a hole cut out and a toilet seat mounted on it. The 5 gallon bucket went inside. It sat in one of the disposable turkey roasting pans which fit in the box perfectly.
A second 5 gal bucket with a lid provided storage for pine sawdust. Put a layer of sawdust in the bottom of the empty bucket, and use more to cover after each use. |
Maybe a plastic camping toilet? It is not too low to the ground and has a lid. Maybe you could add the "freshener" that they use in port-o-potties (unless it has harsh chemicals) or some sawdust?

Google Thetford porta-potti. We took out the marine head in our sail boat and fishing boat along with the holding tank and converted to a porta-potties and found them very useful. They have a built in water supply and small holding tank and just get dumped in a toilet when full.

You're no fun. |
Get a five gallon pail, a toilet seat and make a sawdust toilet.
|
You might make two. One for friends you want to stay for awhile, and another............
|
camping toilets are definately available in most sporting goods outlets

Do a search for Luggable Loo on www.froogle.com
That should get you all the listings online along with where to order and prices. I have 4 of these and they work great. The lid snaps tight and keeps everything contained. There are scent packets that can be used to keep down the smell until the contents are disposed of. A regular 13 gallon handle tie garbage bag is used as the liner and is easy disposal with no mess. And most important, the toilet seat isn't too bad and is pretty comfortable. These toilets are inexpensive enough to have one per person. You can order just the toilet seat and use it on buckets you already have to cut down further on the cost. |
Grandma had us use a ceramic on steel (white and blue striped) bucket with lid and handle- but we had little bottoms then, dunno if they make buckets big enough for adults. Think she kept ammonia in it.

We used one of these chemical toilets when we lived in our cabin in northern Nevada.
http://www.cabelas.com/p-0013058518314a.shtml You can find them at Walmart for $69.95. You can either dump it into a regular toilet or into an RV sanitary dump. It's a pleasant and economical solution. |
You could use the old thunderjug solution from years past, but that it so 19th century.
You could instead use the Star Trek solution - If you look at all the early published plans for the Enterprise, there were no restrooms. Fans theorized that the business was done on the floor and phasers were used to blast it out of existence. Or, if you have a kitty, you could find out why cats are scared of Oggie and trying to do him in.......... :D |

As to the sawdust toilets, each to their own, but I still think dry peat moss works better than sawdust. |

Have you read the Humanure Handbook? (that GREENCOUNTYPETE linked to) You can make their sawdust toilet as fancy or as plain as you want. The basic model can be seen on this page.
This is about as cheap as it gets. Michael |
You may be able to scrounge up a bedside "potty chair" intended for elderly or handicapped people -- basically, a stainless steel frame with a toilet seat and bucket suspended beneath it. Put a curtain around it and you're ready to go!
I often spot these in estate sales, or you might request one on Freecycle. |
