For my tastes, Backwoods Home Magazine is closer to what I'm looking for in a magazine about gardening, livestock, food preservation, firearms, alternative energy, building, and self-sufficiency.

I've got several old TMEN in my stash but don't subscribe any more; I read it on the stands... that's usually all it takes! It's pretty, it's slick, there is still some good information in there, but it always seems like they just throw you an interesting hook and then leave you dangling, tell you just half the story. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try it for a year and see what you think. But IMHO, if you were to subscribe to only one rag, your best money would be spent on Countryside & Small Stock Journal... like this forum, readers helping readers with actual useful experience of what works, what doesn't. Or... just save your money and hang out on this forum! littlesheeps in NM

I got MEN years ago but like a lot of others, stopped subscribing when it got yuppiefied. I will now and then pick one up at the market. We get Backwoods and Countryside, much more useful for us.

I get MEN, it was only $10 for a year and I feel I get my money's worth (although I do not feel it is worth the newstand price). It keeps me entertained during the winter months. I don't always agree with everything that is written and don't / won't use everything that is written, but I do get some usefulness out of it. I have noticed that I can get most of the articles online.

Yes, But we also get Countryside, it is much better and more realistic of homesteading. MEN has sometimes expensive and outlandish ideas. (my opinion)

If you are a homesteader...Countryside's the one to subscribe to. I will look at some of the others at the farm store when I am there.

I have every issue until Shuttlesworth sold the magazine. I did buy the archive DVD with every article from 1970 through 2009, it was a heck of a deal.

I subscribe to MEN, Countryside, Hobby Farms and Backyard Poultry. I like them all. I tend to get some good advice and then I follow it up with more in-depth research (as another poster said). I've gotten a lot of good ideas and am very pleased with the price of the subcriptions to all of them. I pay between $10-12 per year for each subscription and consider them to be valuable resources so I save each copy. Money well spent!

Thanks everyone. Im going to see about MEN..look at a few of them and then decide since I just ordered Backwoods home. I also have MaryJane's Farm that hubby ordered for me. I only have one issue of that so Im not sure about it yet. I had never heard of it before. I usually only get Country Woman and A taste of Home so I am branching out!

I like Hobby Farmer, MEN seems a little too simple

Whats your opinion of it?
I subscribe to Mother and love it. It is the only magazine I have subscribed to since the 80's. Mother is filled with a lot of good practical wisdom that inspires and motivates me. I love the solar projects. I keep all my issues.

I just renewed for $10 for one year. What a bargain!!

I agree 100%, I subscribed for about 10 years then stopped receiving it for a few years, now it's to commercial, political, and green, not for the common, ordinary, normal homesteader or rural country dweller.

I find it worth reading at the library, but I wouldn't pay for it myself.
