Thanks, everyone.
I appreciate your answers. It's comforting to see I'm not the only one to (want to) try this.

i don't have anything to add to what has already been suggested. but what i use is left over woven wire fencing in a circle. it works great for tomatoes and pole beans.

I have ground hogs in my yard. I used the 5 ft. tall tomato cages to support them last year. It worked out pretty well. The only drawback was that I had to place 2 bricks at the base to keep them from tipping over on really windy days.

I planted about 50 bush beans last year. The rabbits were living underneath the plants from the looks of the layer of pellets they left behind.
I really didn't have a problem with them eating the beans. They went for tomatoes mostly.

The only problem I had with bush beans was squatting/stooping and picking and be expected to walk the next day. So luckily I planted the rows far enough apart and took 3 buckets, 1 to sit on and 2 to collect. I planned my remaining days sitting there picking beans. Too bad I can't remember what I planned.

I have used 18" 2x4 wire around the garden in years past and didn't have any problem other than turtles. That was ok with me if they could get in there for as much work as it took them to get in there. Doesn't work well for deer.
That is why I went with bush beans because the deer were eating the pole beans but they won't touch bush beans.

I forgot to add that I do container gardening, this is why I used tomato cages for support.
