I'm sorry but this post made me laugh the hardest I laughed all week!

I've also caught a shrew or two in the mousetraps. Dh still doesn't believe me as he wasn't around when I threw them out. I didn't know that they were beneficial little buggers though. Very informative thread!

If I'm not mistaken, a shrew also has the loudest voice for such a small animal. That's often enough to startle a cat that tries to catch them. If you happen to catch one in a pail or similar, catch it by the nape and pick it up. You won't believe that the sounds that come out of that tiny throat.

Martin, I'm a believer!!! The screech from the shrew that my cats were playing with put a baby rabbit to shame. I've heard mouse shrieks and rabbit shrieks ... non compare with a shrew shriek .... big voices from those tiny bodies.

Shrews are ferocious insectivores (they eat insects more than anything else) as well as carnivores of other small rodents. If you have shrews in your basement they'll clean out all insects/spiders you have in your house. Don't worry about their venom, it is not poisonous to anything bigger than another shrew. When their prey supply in the house runs out they'll move back outside.

We've got tons of voles in the house - or used to. Anytime we open the walls/ceilings we are sure to find skeletons. Mice too.
