Old Vet.....just follow the scent of date & walnut scones & I'll toss a couple to ya!
Easyday....that looks EXACTLY like our back yard last year; I'll try to dig up some pics, they were beautiful (pain in a butt, but beautiful nonetheless).
Looks like we're in for more snow than ice according to the weather guys this morning.

I'm doing similar to a previous poster. Working on laundry and baking bread and granola cereal today. Baked banana nut muffins yesterday that are now sitting in the freezer. Will do last minute baths and dishes this evening, then fill bathtub and buckets with water.
The 4WD vehicle is gassed up. The generator is ready to go. DH has brought some wood inside for the woodstove. We have bottled water, food, propane for the cookstove/grill and lamp oil and wicks for the lamps. The kids' snowboots are sitting in the garage just waiting.
During last year's ice storm we were fortunate to only be without power for about two hours. Some of those that we worship with were without for two weeks. We bought our homestead about 6 weeks ago and a power outage here would probably take a lot longer than two hours to fix. We're out in the middle of nowhere and not real high on the priority list I would imagine.
The last forcast we saw was calling for a little ice and then about 9" of snow here. We'll see...

It's raining/sleeting here now, but not real bad yet. However, just saw on the news that the next closest small town to me (Sapulpa, about 15 miles away) is pretty bad already, roads slick, hard to see, coming down pretty thick. I'm slightly southwest of there, so it maybe just hasn't gotten to me yet.
There's already been a bad accident there involving a fire truck that was heading to aid another accident that had happened. This could be real interesting for Tulsa since they just laid off over 100 policemen and 147 firefighters, and they said they used 90% of their salt and sand supplies on the Christmas storm, good planning right? lol They're calling for freezing rain/sleet the rest of today and tonight, with snow on top of it tomorrow, yuck.

Callie,
I'm just west of the dam. The ice and rain is coming pretty good now. All my roofs are glistening with ice and I have icicles hanging off the gutters. The trees have a light white layer of ice on them. I can hear the sleet bouncing off the windows.

Well, howdy neighbor! Yes, it's coming down pretty hard here now too, starting to form icicles on the roof, and the puddles are freezing over. I just saw someone laboring up my hill in a 4-wheel drive, they may not be going back out, lol. My road is a real booger in the best conditions! Everyone on my road drives 4-wheel drive. Just heard there are areas of Sapulpa without power already.
Not much I can do but wait for it to come or not. I'm working, trying to get a few hours ahead while I still can. I've got stew simmering in the crockpot, sure smells good. I just took cornbread out of the oven. Think I'm going to go take a shower and get my hair washed. It's down to my waist and is a real pain to wash in the sink, sure hope I don't have to resort to that before this is over, lol. Hang in there, we'll get through it, we always do!

It's spitting a little something out there. Hood of the truck has thin layer of ice already.
Entergy is gearing up, and has already made arrangements with MS and LA for their crews to be ready to hit the road.
They're saying we'll probably get about 1/2" of ice before the snow starts. 1/2" is plenty to knock our power out.
We're ready. Nothing more to do. Critters are locked up, loaded up, and bedded down... except the horse. Always afraid he'll slip and break a leg!

This will help some if you have time to listen click on http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/ Click on a state and then on a county to listen to police and fire departments. It will give you an idea as to how bad it will get. I will post it on another thread so that everybody can listen.

Well, we bought our place a year ago last June as a rather damaged foreclosure, so this year we've got:
Fully functional SAFE electric (including solar panels & battery bank)
Running water - cold AND hot!
Faucets that run or do not run as is appropriate (as compared to running when off or not running when on - except when the pipes freeze up)
Insulation (now if I actually had a chance to get the drywall up, we wouldn't have brown-kraft-paper-wallpaper . . . . )
A dryer that doesn't involve clothespins and rope
An actual television (so much better than trying to watch a movie on an itty-bitty computer screen! even if we're just watching movies - no reception)
No holes in the plastic covering the windows . . . . Oops, spoke too soon, there goes the cat & 4-year-old DD
Speaking of cats, an 8-month-old 20+ pound kitten . . . . . who loves to play in the water outside . . . . . and then jump into bed with you while half-soaked . . . . .
A good-size stack of wood outside the door that (mostly) doesn't need to be cut down more
A 9-month-old Great Pyr puppy (and DANG is it gonna be funny watching her on the ice for the first time!)
3 goats (who I'm sure will find a way out of the fence during the worst part of the storm)
2 horses who don't seem to understand the concept of using the barn in nasty weather
4 geese (one of which will become a late Christmas dinner if another chicken is killed)
And best of all, a well-stocked liquor cabinet
It's paid for and that's what counts, right?? RIGHT???

Hoping you're all snug safely in your homes and doing ok. Please keep us posted.
Feeling really lucky that this one passed us by - we've already seen enough of that stuff.

What I have this year that I didn't have last year:
The sense and understanding of having a plan...LOL!
My own home with a wood burner in the basement.
Preps:
Cord of wood in the woodshed and 10 trips worth in the house
Four boxes of kindling (I am a wood burning neophyte and the burner doesn't draw real well)
Water for me and a bazillion containers of non-drinking water for pets and washing and flushing, including the tub
Food for me and the pets
Fresh batteries in the flashlights and new headlamps received as a house-warming gift from co-workers
Working Co2 monitors
Working weather radio
Non-digital telephone and two cell phones fully charged
Private wine selection (housewarming gift also)
Charcoal and grill for cooking outside if need be
Pre-heated thermos of coffee
Fully gassed -up vehicle
Sense to stay at home!
My only concern about power is if the lines come down. They run across my deck and by my basement door and I don't want me or the dogs to get fried! Not quite sure yet how to turn off the main if the lines come down. It's an old glass fuse panel.
My family says since I am so prepared, it will probably bypass me...LOL! It's my first major weather event since my husband passed away, so I do miss the comfort of knowing I'm not alone, but otherwise, I pray I am ready. So far, I'm in the hole and it's all around me but clear skies here so far.
To all in it, be safe, be warm and ya'll are in my prayers!

Ditto this! We are supposed to be seeing the first of the storm by noon today. Calling for ice then 9-12 inches !! Took care of all the stock yesterday. They are bedded down and ready (as they can be). I am washing clothes and the dishwasher is running right now! I am baking bread, cookies, granola, etc, and cooking pots of soup and beans. We have plenty of wood laid by, and 300 quarts of food. I am washing buckets this morning to put cooking and drinking water in. Will run the kiddos thru the shower later, then fill the tub with water to wash our hands with and flush the potty. Lamps and oil ready. The local NWS (national weather service center), in the neighboring town, says to be prepared to go without electric for up to a week. Oh, well here we go.........

LOL, Christy.... that Navy talk still jumps out without me thinking about it.
We're fine so far. Ice on trees/wires, but no wind, praise the Lord.
We've got water and power.
Not precipitating at the moment, but 100% chance for snow today and tonight.
Better snow than ice!
Thanks for asking!

No snow yet and it's been too cold all week for us to have any ice. Only problem is that one of my does kidded very early this morning, I wasn't there and the kids' ears may be frostbitten. And the dam, an older first freshener (long story), hasn't really developed an udder nor is she interested in standing for them to nurse. I'm inside right now, mixing some "formula" the folks at the vet school gave me to feed them until I can run to the feed store for a bag of replacer.
Still waiting to see how the weather in Charlotte NC will affect DH getting home tonight.

I got about 1/4 inch of sleet or ice pellets then snow about 6 inches. The further south the more ice. Power is still on. If I can get the dogs to stay outside or in I wouldn't open the door.

Thanks for the link Old Vet! I've been looking for something like that.
Luv2farm, and everyone else still in the path of the storm...it may not be nearly as bad as predicted. At least it wasn't for us. They were predicting 6-9" of ice and snow here too, but I've only got about 1/2" to 3/4" of ice and now it's snowing, about 1" so far. Temps didn't get nearly as cold as predicted either.
In Tulsa, the big town nearest to me, they didn't get hardly anything at all, everyone is either laughing about it or mad that everyone got them all hyped up for nothing. I'm further south and got it a little worse than that, and further south in Oklahoma City it looks like they got a bit more, but still not anywhere nearly as much as predicted. So, hopefully it won't be so bad on the rest of you either! :crossing fingers:
