I found all my windows along the road next to peoples garbage. I'd say with this weather, next summer people will be replaceing their old windows, and you can get some good pickens.

There was an article in Handyman this month that had a greenhouse built from scrap windows. That's what we're going to do once we get on the land. I'd like two, one kitchen green house basically just a lean to on the side w/the kitchen for herbs and some regularly used foods a few tomatoes etc. and then a larger one. We have tremendous bug issues here so unless the thing is really hearty I'm going to try and od everything in a greenhouse. I just lost everything this year bc of drought and bugs. These look really nice!

Here's a picture of our unfinished greenhouse, it's attached to our mudroom/canning kitchen. Most of the materials were free, recycled or purchased in the clearance racks at Lowe's. It will get about 6 hours of direct sun during the summer and diffused sun from 2pm until sunset. All the windows/sliders open.

Resurrecting an old thread here... a bunch of great ideas and innovations...

I was wondering. Has anyone built a greenhouse frame out of bamboo to cover with plastic?

I'll have a MASSIVE stand of bamboo (the creeping kind UGH) and was thinking it would be a great material to use for the frame. ... since it's there....

If you have, do you have any pictures you could post of it? Did it hold up well?

I'd take that bamboo in a second over milled wood. Heck, the wood even makes a great pipe for water feeds.

Thank you Seeria.

I didn't get a good look at the bamboo in the back of the stand, but most the stuff I saw in the front was smaller pieces. It was about 20 feet tall, but not real large around.

I was thinking of doing a hoop style frame. Take and bundle several pieces together to make up thick bottom runners, then using pieces on each side rising up and bowed to the center, and tying them to a top beam made up of a few pieces bundled too. Then tying them together along the sides with a few more bundles.. .

I love the idea of the rain collection. That's a really nice idea... Once I get out there and can have a look, I'll have to see if there is any larger pieces in the back of the stand that hasn't been cut back year after year.

I was just hoping someone has done this so I could get their feedback of how well it stood up, and what they found they would do different.

I haven't started on mine besides build a few of the beams.

It will run east to west, the north side will be covered and insulated, i was going to put my fish tanks in the green house but I decided to add a hip roof off the north side to house them. it will cut my glazing costs.

making it gambrel style though.

making these

The big picture plan is that twin wall poly-carbonate as my glazing.
both on the inside and out side.
Should help a bunch to insulate the greenhouse, I'm also thinking it should help with the plants not getting sun burned. as the panels have 80% light transmission.
Going to have to settle for poly until i can raise the funds.

into these

basically 1x stock from pallets, milled straight and true, wide face to wide face, 3 deep,
nailed together.staggered so no breaks between pieces line up.

You can make beams as long as you like from what would other wise be useless wood.
they join with a plywood gusset at the joint to make the trusses.

Bit of work, but the only out of pocket is gas to pick them up and some electricity.
When I do pick them up it by the trailer load so the gas isn't to pricey.
still lot cheaper then having to buy it.

Wow I just relized how old this thread was... So Tiempo did you get one built?

Here's ours. We built it last year. I have polycarbonate panels to replace the plastic. We just haven't made time to get them installed.

I won't be planting tomatoes down the middle again until I re-design the irrigation system. The tomato leaves block the water from the left side of the middle bed.
