Oh yes, Beeman - that is a good one - less riff-raff about.

I notice, when its cold, that I crave soup and homemade bread. We snuggle on the couch more and watch old movies. The dogs share a rug rather than spreading out on two. The cats run to the barn faster to get locked up for the night.

When it is cold, I notice how fast the clothes dry faster on the drying rack and the moisture makes the air seem warmer. I spend more time reading my seed inventory and looking at Seed Savers Exchange's site. I am thankful for the residual heat from my old Garland cook stove - heat which in the summer I resent.

When it is cold out I notice the boys run faster when going to dump the compost bowl and they haul extra blankets out of the laundry room. The boys also make more toast and use more butter. The outdoor thermometers get more attention and the boys compete to see whose room is colder than our main rooms!

I notice how the leaves droop on the Mountain Laurel as they curl up to preserve moisture in the dry cold air. In the cold I watch to see if my Grandmother's Camellia bushes drop buds or if they hang on to bloom in March. We push aside the frozen parsley leaves or the frosted over kale to reach for the good leaves underneath. Wood chips in the garden paths crunch and heave under foot.

I like it when its cold outside!

You know it's cold when there is frost on the inside of a double pane window. A 5 gallon bucket of water is solid over night. Anything with metal parts doesn't want to cooperate. Snow just doesn't crunch, it literally squeaks. Batteries become boat anchors and it burns the nostrils just to take a bit of breath. And I chose to move back here to my home state, what was I thinking? Aaaargh!

After spending a day outside working in gloomy, damp, breezy, chilly weather the whole idea of eating smaller portions sounds preposterous...

Most of my right handed gloves are now frozen on the gate, and I am either the supidest or least prepaired person around, since I didn't see anyone else outside but me.

The back of my hand feels like it's been hit with a baseball bat and is just starting to heal. a very unusual (and unpleasant)feeling.

I notice that it is a lot easier to hurt yourself. Muscles are tense and skin is more brittle when cold. I have several busted knuckles that I keep rebusting.

Then there is the itchiness of woodstove-dried skin. My knees especially are kinda scaly and gross.

At one time, I resisted a chance to live in AZ. The fact that a desert is so dead, no animals, nothing green, deadly if you get stuck out in it.

Then, while I was in my woodlot, cutting logs and firewood in below zero temperatures, it dawned on me that there were no animal tracks in the snow, no wildlife at all. Even the deer had migrated to the cedar swamps 20 miles away. So, I'm living in a place without animals, nothing green and if left outside, I'd die.

I know its cold out when I can hear the neighbors talking, a half mile away.

My 4 wheeler won't start.
McDonald's fountain cokes don't sweat. Completely dry outside the cup. Unusual for here.

My hands become chapped, and sometimes my fingers even split open. That hurts like heck...really hard to explain a split in your skin from the weather.

When it is cold enough to keep a good fire going in the wood stove all day I can cook beans, stew, soup on the wood stove and turn the electric stove off. Cooked me some beans on the wood stove yesterday, may do chili today.
