We just leave ours on the counter in a covered dish. Never had a problem with it going bad.

I found my butter bell at a garage sale a few years ago.....was marked a quarter. When I went up to pay for it, the guy asked me if I knew what it was & I told him. Said he'd probably have kept it if he knew what it was beforehand!

I can't stand hard butter, and since I'm too lazy / forgetful to take out the butter 15 minutes before having a massive craving for homemade bread & SOFT butter, the butter bell is a savior for me!

Never had the butter fall out don't know what would cause that. We always left it out in a butter dish too. No A/C and it gets pretty hot so the butter would liquify in the dish. Doesn't happen with the bell.

I love my butter bell also and have had the butter fall out a few times. I have no real clue way this happens, but I did notice that when I replaced the water with colder water, the butter can fall.

I love mine and gave for Christmas to all SIL this year. I bought them here. http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/but...rble-dish.aspx

The butter does fall in the water occasionally.

I went looking for a butter bell and couldn't believe the prices. Ok, for handcrafted stoneware I can see paying $30 for something unique but I just wanted a cheap one. The cheapest I found was on Amazon for $19. Then it occured to me that there is an Old Time Pottery store (http://www.oldtimepottery.com/index.php?page=locations) in Columbus. I had to make a trip to town anyway and found one for $3.99. Solid Glass. The wife would rather have a chicken motif but cows will do. My thoughts.... WHAT DIFFERENCE DO IT MAKE?

Anyway... here's what they look like. I've never used one and I hate cold hard butter but it can't be beat when it's soft.

We have trouble keeping our butter fresh. I make it myself and I know homemade doesn't last as long as the store stuff....I think I will have to try one of these. DH hates hard butter....

Never saw one before, I use my Grandmothers glass covered round butter dish, never had a problem. I only put a 1/2 cup out at a time. I use out of the refrigerator for cooking. I don't like hard butter either

We have the problem too. I haven't figured out a cure either.

I've had that happen too. I assumed I just didn't have the butter packed into the bell well enough and air or water got between the bell and butter. Just a guess. I really don't know. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often. I love our butter bell.

I was wondering why the inside glass (for the butter cavity) was frosted when I opened ours. I guess that might help give the butter something to grab. The rest of the glass was not frosted.

If the inside of yours is smooth you might be able to use some very fine sandpaper or emory cloth to rough the inside up a bit. Maybe that will help.

I have used one for the last 30+ years, and we love it. No cold butter on toast.

Yes, we have one and love it. Only time it falls out into the water is occasionally when the weather is very hot. With this, the butter doesn't get as soft as it would just sitting, covered, on the cabinet. Lehmans, online, specialty kitchen shops all carry them.

I have one and like it in winter. I haven't used it in summer since one summer when it did go bad in the cabinet, even though I changed the water every day. I think it's just too hot here. We don't eat a lot of butter, so half a cup lasts several days.
