Got lucky I suppose. First one I was put on has been fine for me. The key is that it takes more than a couple weeks for most meds to level out and really start doing their job. If you used 24 in one year that could be the issue. Thats 2 a month. I would look at changing doctors and not meds. Obviously the one you have does not have a clue what he is doing.

Exforge HCT is what I use. My bp runs 115/75 to a max of 130/85 on average. It was running 175/90 and up.

From my "Old Fashioned Cures and Proven Home Remedies" book they say:

eat 2 bananas per day. can drop BP by 10%--potassium helps regulate blood pressure

celery--contains compounds called pthalides--relaxes blood vellels and reduce stress hormones. good for taking before bed

flaxseed--rich in omega 3 fatty acids

Boiled potatoes--contain kukoamines that lower blood pressure

Grape juice--fresh concord grape juice rich in polyphenols helps lower blood pressure

Just throwing that out for you and hope some might help.

I agree with the advice to seek out a geriatric specialist.

The older we get affects the ways drugs interact in our systems. A doctor who specializes in the treatment of the elderly would be knowledgeable if certain drugs or drug combinations are reacting adversely in his system.

I have seen individuals admitted to the nursing home where I used to work on a list of drugs as long as your arm and basically wheelchair bound. The doctor starts weeding out the meds, finding that the poor soul is taking three different meds prescribed by 2 different doctors for the same problem, trying new meds and in a week Aunt Sally is down in the activity room playing bingo and doing sing a longs.

Most importantly, don't give up or let your loved one give up. You might want to have him undergo a THOROUGH physical to see if he has any other underlying problems that would be causing him to have unresponsive hypertension.

It takes time and patience to get these drugs combined in the right dosage and number to make them work with the least side effects. Hang in there and don't be afraid to get a second or third opinion.

My brother had this very trouble! He started on a proper diet and regular exercise, controlled his weight and his bp is now fine. It took almost 6 months. I recommend it highly, If the above reasons are why your Dh's bp is high.

Good luck with this...I know its serious and cause for concern. The old saw "In every pill is a little poison" is true though. If your dh can do this with the above remedies he will be much better off.

An older "regular" at the cafe I used to work told me his wife had heard cinnamon would help regulate BP. She started eating cinnamon toast for breakfast every day and it worked for her.
