Been taking it for years with no side effects....& it works. But I take it at night, so that I don't get my BP too low at mid morning. That was happening & causing weakness & nausea. So got that worked out.

Another popular one is Benicar (regular, HCTZ and HTZ). I was surprised my Dr. started me on HTZ since the Benicar website advises: BENICAR HCT is for patients who need even more blood pressure reductions than are obtained with BENICAR or HCTZ alone, but BENICAR HCT should not be used for initial blood pressure therapy.

Even with it I still get spikes.

I take it and it does the job well. I take it at night because when I took it in the morning, it was all I could do to make it to lunch without a nap.

Also, don't forget to take it. Missing a dose will make you feel bad. Missing two doses will make you feel horrid, and the one time I missed three doses (got stuck and nothing I could do about it), I thought I was going to die.

I love it for my patients- cheap, works well, good for diabetics and kidneys. That said my poor mom can't take it- she got throat itching possibly related to the chronic cough that troubles some folks so much they can't take it, and I have once in my life met someone with the worst side effect- tongue swelling which I could see could be deadly had it gone on. (If this tongue swelling- or some other body part swelling; all called angioedema, occurs- you just can't take lisinopril or any of its brother ACE inhibitors, too risky of a worse allergic reaction.)

Right on to all of you who mentioned the 'lisinopril' cough. That cough is one of the side effects of the drug that causes folks a lot of problems. My DH was on it for years and coughing his head off only his cough was a loose phlegmy type of cough. Funny thing is that one of his patients mentioned to him that she had to go off the drug due to the same cough. DH switched BP meds and is now cough free. He thought the cough was from his allergies.

Personally, I've taken a small dose of it as needed for fluctuating BP and had no adverse reactions to it and as a nurse, have administered it to all age groups. What works for one may not work for another.

One bit o advice I can give is watch your 'occult' salt intake. Processed foods are notoriously pickled in salt without you even realizing that you are consuming large amounts. Some people are very salt sensitive and even a small amount can cause your BP to rise. Your PCP can advise you best as to how much sodium your diet and your BP can tolerate.

Also, add some exercise to your daily schedule. Even walking can benefit your blood pressure therapy.

Good luck and good for you for treating the notorious Silent Killer.

Oh, now that you mention the swelling . . . I remembered.

After one of my excursions to the ER for my blood pressure, the docs gave me Prinzide, which is a combo of lisinopril & hydrochlorothiazide. I returned the next day with a very weird symptom: my top lip had swelled - WAY puffed out - and everything else was fine. My goodness, I was so embarrassed! I looked like I was ready for Halloween!

They gave me a bunch of Benadryl, I slept all day, then woke up OK again.

I can take hydrochlorothiazide by itself, no problem. In fact I do take 25 mg every day.

No Lisinopril for me; apparently I am allergic!

Make sure the Dr keeps an eye on your kindney function. I have been on lisinipril for some time but Dr upped the dosage. I went into complete kidney failure and was in the hospital for a week. When he lowered my dosage, my kidneys returned to normal without any other treatment or damage.

I don't think anyone mentioned this, but Lisinopril made me dizzy. But only when driving. The dizziness didn't start until I'd been on it a while. One day I was helping DH move some equipment to a different farm, and he was driving behind me. When we got to the other farm, he said, "Woman, what's wrong with you? You were all OVER the road!" I quit taking it, and the dizziness went away.

My husband was put on that his first time for HIGH BP (dont remember #'s) but it QUICKLY lowered him and almost put him in a coma... so we went thru 4 diff brands/trails and one even sent him to er 4 times thinking he was having a heart attack ( it was acid reflux shutting off his wind pipe) well he got put back on Lisnopril and is perfectly fine... NORMAL bp 120/80 is norm for him.... as far as the cough... he has always had a "cough" in the am ( smoker) sooo to him.. it isnt an issue

It made me cough. After my doctor dropped it, I was talking to my sister, it made her cough too.

I've been taking it for a couple years. No real cough that I recall.
Mine is Lisinopril/HCTZ.
I also take Atenolol, and Diltiazem.
All are on Walmart's $4/$10 list, and I get a 90 day supply at a time of each.
