We had a metal roof installed over the existing shingle roof. The installer used the purlins and we've never had a problem. This is a standing rib roof and is quieter than the old shingle roof. The only advice I have is to make certain the gutters are capable of carrying off the extra water drainage without flooding over the edge of the gutter.

This site has forums and professionals to answer your questions. Plenty of rumors and misconceptions about metal roofing out there. The warranty you hear about is on the paint and only the paint. If the paint fails they will give you another sheet of roofing or whatever peels, few would replace it as it's easier to just paint over it.

Roofing over shingles is no big deal but it needs an underlayment like a heavy tar paper or foil/foam/foil insualation.

It's still only as clear as mud to me but last year we put standing seam galvalume on top of the shingles (built 2000 so only one layer with a few repairs- tornado and poor nail gun technique). The roofer told me the thinner wouldn't be much weaker and would have less popping (tin oil can straightening out in heat or cold noises) so we did that for a few thousand less IIRC. Don't know what layering used under it, he said attic vents kept roof from building up condensation from temp differences IIRC. No noises but our attic puts a layer of air between most of the house and the roof- little noisier in rain when I can hear it mostly outside!

Very happy to see my sky blue to invisible roof (metal color- reflects sky color) from a distance, lower AC costs this past summer but it was cooler wetter over all so don't know if that's from the roof, expect my heating costs may be a bit higher this winter without a big black solar heater on the house. Also per Sec. Energy Steve Chu changing black to white/reflective roof reduces green house effect!

Our new house, stucture was completed in 2007, were still working on the details, has a Galvalume Metal roof. We have a full attic, and hear no noise during the heavy rains. Our roof is attached with stainless steel screws.

In my opinion installing a metal roof over existing shingles in the ozarks is asking for a mold problem.
even in august there will be some moisture trapped in the shingles if metal in installed over them you create a steam bath in which mold and mildew will thrive causing the shingles and decking to rot .
In a perfect world you would strip the entire roof repair any damaged decking, then install ice shield to the entire roof decking. at which point you can install standing seam directly over the ice shield. if installing an ag panel in this area you would need 2x4 stringers as 1xs do not provide enough holding strength for the wind conditions .
the biggest leak problem with the high rib ag panels is the neo washers and installers getting in a hurry . you have to have a good screw gun with a well adjusted clutch, if you spin the washer or smash it you will have a leak.
the advantage of the high rib is that you have space between the stringers to run plumbing vent pipes all the way to the ridge avoiding the need and future leak potential of pipes and flashings through the panel. They are vented using a fiber material under the ridgecap

I hadnt though about the mold issue thanks. I think I have decided to tear it down to the roof sheathing and go with the standing seam.

My roof is corrugated steel. No leaks if you overlap 2 ribs on the corrugated, and I fastened it in the valleys with 3" metal roofing scres w/ neoprene washers. They dont leak there. The only problems is the wind blowing all the time and lifting up the tin.

The metal dealer in diamond mo has a very good sales rep that can give you all the info on residential standing seam . It goes on very easily.
I would still recommend either peal and stick Ice shield or the dupont roof liner synthetic felt replacer over the decking
