I don't have those skills either and have been happy to have professionals come out and build stuff. Just had a pole barn put up a couple of weeks ago. The builder lives a half mile down the road and goes home for lunch, so potty was not a problem (could have used mine- gee, maybe he did!). However, when the house was being built I went against DH's wishes and rented a porta potty for the duration.

Alice
they have ben paid 1/3rd up front, to be paid another 1/3 after building is up and the last 3rd after they pour the cement and put in radiant floor heating.
minelson..I love it!/. There is no place in the world where I feel like I do when I am at my land. It was a great feeling to see my little diagrams and pictures turn out in reality into my little house. I will remember for all my life walking in...around the corner, totally apprehensive about how it turned out ..only to see it and have my heart sing.
I went to goodwill yesterday and bought some plaques. The grand kids think I am crazy nailing them up when we have no walls. I think its never too soon to make it homey~ But they are smart kids..perhaps I also am a bit crazy!

As they aren't finished, I would gently talk to them about how the rest of the project and the mess should be handled. Start with something you can complement them on, then gracefully move into setting goals of not having a mess or poo around.

WOWZER! it is gorgeous! I think there would be downspouts if there were gutters. you are going to have stuff to question and deal with with such a big project. Don't be shy, and just ask Mr. Customer Service. When we had a bunch of work done at our property I felt like a nagging idiot with all my questions and demands. Just think about the money you spent and that will give you motivation to say something and ask questions. Now is not the time to be meek...get exactly what you paid for!
I would be hanging up stuff too! I love the color and the front door is really pretty!!

Is it possible that they weren't going to pick up the mess until the entire project was complete? Since they are coming later to pour the floors, maybe they were going to clean up when they were done.

I think the scratches are worth asking about.

I know nothing about building, but perhaps the gutters are being added when they come to complete the work as well? I'd definitely inquire about this if you are paying for gutters.

I love your new house. Looks great.

Is there one point that didn't become evident until Reply #24? If they still have to lay the cement and install heating, they're not done yet! That's when the touch-up and clean-up takes place. They've still got more mess to make! If gutters are to be included, that's also the last item of trim to go on. With the short eave overhang on the second photo, looks about right for standing gutter. Blue and gray is a common combination but it looks like that one corner piece is Royal Blue while the roof and rake trim are Polar Blue.

the color difference is the camera I think. Well if they were coming back and \clean up would have been then..I just beat them too it and saved them some work. It was a nice day today and it felt good to clean it all up.I did not want wind to blow stuff all around. It took us 3 years to finally get most of the garbage cleaned up from the drunken prior owners. I do not want it to become another garbage pit. Even when we still had 3 huge piles of garbage and rubbish out there and we would camp..we would pack everything out. If the kids left a paper wrapping on the ground they heard about it. I will not contribute to making my property a trash pit.

Didn't read the other replies:

I'd be very concerned about the scratched tin. That should be dealt with. It will rust out on you. It should ber replaced at their expense.

The garbage - yea it's a pain, but if they didn't pick it up the 1st time, they won't pick it up to your satisfaction anyhow, and it doesn't take long with a magnet to get the metal bits, rake together the burnable bits, and much of the construction stuff looks like it could be useful down the road.

Just had my building put up, and they offered - & I happily wanted - any of the leftover construction materials. They had a dumpster there, but why waste goiod wood & tin?

They did a fair job picking up, but I had a _lot_ of nails/screws to get and a lot of 2 inch long bits of wood. Just the nature of building, I'd not want to have them work an extra 3 hours at their pay scale to have it clean.

My opinion. The serious issue is the scratched tin. 'Here' I got 2 pieces left over, they were scratched too bad, they left them on the ground.

It's not tin. That's not used in that type of building. It's painted zinc-coated steel. Doesn't rust, even the sheared edges. For some info on the type of manufacturing involved, visit www.trachte.com where I retired from.

If the contractor is really into customer service tell him your concerns. Let him know he needs to address these issues upfront so there are no hard feelings.

I think there is going to be a lot more potential for future scratches. I don't understand why they put in the fancy door and windows without having the floor poured and interior walls framed in.

CF,
We hired them to do the dry in only and I think its common practice to pour cement after putting up the exterior for pole buildings? As for the windows and doors he said it would go better if they framed them and put them up rather to just put up exterior walls and we go back with a saw and cut holes and frame windows. Since none of the interior walls will be load bearing and since we plan on doing all the interior ourselves...????
I hope that this wont be cause for problems later...
