Thats kinda funny, I was just out at my FIL last week pulling out old fence posts that his father had put in more than 75 years ago. Hedge, and hedge in concrete like I stated. The hedge was rotted, busted off at the ground, the other took a 60 hp tractor to pull, since the 32 hp couldn't, not rotted, we then set it in another location. It's also kinda strange that the concrete method is recomended by the OCI.

It is willy-nilly around here too - trying to determine which post will rot and which one won't. We have lots of the Locust Posts in the ground already and some we put with concrete and some we did not. There does not seem to be any pattern about which one will get loose or not. We also have some Locust split posts from the mid 1900's that are still in the ground and still solid!

Thanks everyone -- good discussion.

The pier block has a hole in the center. A peice of re-rod is extended past the top of the pier and the pier block sides over it.

If you're close to the coast you may be able to find a lumberyard that sells to companies that build bulkheads and piers. They'll have the 2.5lb CCA treated lumber. Culpper is one of the companies that supplies the stuff for marine use. That's the only wood post I'd use for permanency meaning 50 years plus unless you're in an area that has hedge apple/osage orange. Other than that, pour a concrete pier or use native stone to build piers.

Concrete around wood will trap water and encourage the fungal growth that causes wood to rot.
